I've mitre cut a lot of different stuff before but somehow this quarter round I'm trying to mitre on a project I'm working on isn't going well. I make sure to pit the moldong on the mitre saw the same way every time but my 45 joints are matching up at all: it's 3/4"x3/4" material. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to get these joints to fit correctly?

In my experience, there are normally two possibilities:

1. Your miter saw may need to be calibrated. Use a protractor to draw a line at a 45 degree angle on a piece of scrap lumber that is at least 1X6. If it misses any part of that line, you will know to calibrate it.

2. Your house may not be square. If you have a framing square, place it in the corner to see if it fits correctly.

I'll double check my saw but it's pretty new so it shouldn't be off. I put a speed square up to the corners of the porch I'm working on and they're within a few degrees of square so I don't know what the deal is. Other than that, quarter round should mitre just like any other piece of material right? There's not special technique you need to get it to fit together right?

use it to grab the angle of the corner you're applying the quarter round to and then match the angle of your mitre saw to it

Where are the cuts open at ?

If the long points are open then cut the angle steeper than 45 and if short points are open adjust it to cut less than 45

Invest in a miter saw protractor - it will save you time and headaches.

If you are working with bullnose corners, this trim gauge comes in pretty handy as well.
