Our retaining wall we had built is out of treated lumber. We chose to stay away from railroad ties because of the creosote and just the general ugliness. I can send you some pictures of the build (builders built it, not me) and it shows the dead men that were sunk behind the wall to hold it up. The wall faces the back of the house so we wanted something that was a "little prettier" as the wife said. Plus, we plan on trying to integrate it into a seating area at some point in the future

I know people that used them for landscaping in central TX. They don't last as long as you think they would. After 10 years they all were getting pretty crappy.

If anything the creosote process would make roaches avoid them.

They do like the nooks and crannies that become available though.

When I moved into my new home they previous owners had them everywhere. They make excellent homes for all insects, even some I had never seen or haven't seen in years. Also good for lizards, geckos and snakes.

I have a few in my backyards, and yes, roaches like them. They aren't just swarming with roaches, but on any night I can typically find a few crawling on them.

I like the looks of walls built with 6x6 pressure treated. Very do-able yourself and avoids the inconsistency of using used railroad ties.

Bdgol-what type of drainage did the use at the base of the wall?

No official drainage. Just graded top soil and then sod over that. I am hoping I don't have to add a French drain at some point. The wife and I would like to turn the area into an entertainment area if we can

I used cedar 4x4's for my garden. Much fewer insects, as cedar seems to repel most insects.

I just replaced some ties. Wish I would've taken before and after. I am very happy with the result. I'll try and post some pics later in the day.
