I have heard if you spend $2000+ on supplies they sometimes offer 10-15% off of your purchase.

We are doing a fairly large remodel and knocking $500-$700 would help.

well, the worst they can do is say no.

Never have negotiated with them up front on large job, but twice have demanded and received discounts for jobs not performed up to standard. Once for a counter top job that got completely botched, and another on carpet installation that we weren't completely satisfied with. Believe we got about 20% back for the counters and 10% for the carpet - both times at Lowes.

So I think you have a chance at getting some discount.

Talk with the manager on duty ahead of when you plan to make your purchase. It shouldn't be an issue.

If they say no, go find a Lowe's or HD new mover coupon and use that.

And I assume you are just purchasing materials, not contracting with them for installation. No experience with the latter.

When we built our house last year, we bought our Washer, dryer, fridge and chest freezer from Home Depot. The manager knocked 10% off without flinching and free delivery. I think we caught him on a good day. Worst they can say is no.

I've gotten both bulk discounts on goods(as compared to ticket price) and materials donated to non profits through Home Depot. Went through the pro desk both times. They know they have to compete with lowes and other lumber yards so they work to get better prices for bigger jobs.

When building my house, we went in and spent about 7500 at one time. Don't remember the percentage, but did get somewhere around 10% off. It was called a QSP. One associate had us take a piece of paper and write down quantity, price, and item # so they could submit it. When we finally finished about 3 hrs later and waited another 30 minutes for someone that knew what to do(original associate was gone and didn't want to wait), the associate that helped just scanned it all and then suspended and submitted.

It is through the commercial desk. YMMV.

On another note, got the large 00 wire for my house for about 1/3 of list price from Lowes as it was a cut and I bought some of the ends of the rolls. Paid $250 for about $750 worth of wire.

You just have to find the right person at the right time and don't be an @$$.

When we were pricing stuff for a remodel a few years back, several of the HD guys told us to go to the pro desk when we got our list finalized and they could help. They took the list, bundled all the stuff together, and helped load it in my truck, all with around a 10% discount.

Heck yes they'll give you a break if you ask. We got carpet and tile laid earlier this year. Labor was reduced and they were more than willing to give us 10% off. Add a lowes credit card on top of that and we had 15+% off.

Take your wife with you and let her work her magic with the sales guys a bit.

ASK! Have wife ask first. Can only say no. Look online for competitive pricing and let them know if lower on line prices. If prior military, ask for 15% after asking for other up front discounts. See about online discounts/rebates from manufacturer. Negotiate, negotiate. Be prepared to walk out if necessary.

Go to Post Office and get a movers packet. If lucky there is 10% off coupon but lately they direct you to Lowe's website with a coupon registration code. I've used my address and email twice and they email you a 10% off coupon. Just did this couple weeks ago for some laminate. It does take about 3 days to get the email though.

You can buy a 10% off coupon on eBay for a couple bucks. I get one every time I anticipate a several hundred dollar or more purchase.

At the time of my kitchen remodel, they had 20% off coupons. I used one on my kitchen remodel and saved the maximum $1000. Bought it for ~$3.

We signed up for a Commercial Credit account thru my wife's business. Automatic 5% off at the register every time.

Yes. They have the margins to negotiate. 10% is handed out like candy which is nothing other than tax. If you are making more than 1 or 2 large items you should be able to negotiate 20% overall for multiple thousand purchase.

Get a list, ask for discount, threaten to go to other box especially if they are close by.

Another thought, look at CardCash.com for unused gift cards. Right now, Lowes cards are running at 9% discount and HD at 7%. If you can get ~15% at the store, plus use a card from CardCash, you're easily looking at 20%+ discount.

Yet another suggestion, if it's a big purchase of just a few items (i.e. a bunch of appliances), perhaps just offer $XXX amount rather than a discount (i.e. a fridge that is $1,499, offer them $1,200 and go from there).

My Home Depot guys tell me the policy is that any building materials purchase over $2,500 can be reviewed for discounted pricing at the pro desk.

I use my son's military discount whenever I make a large purchase. If he is unavailable, I ask a co-worker who is former military.

I told the guy showing me washers/dryers that I would buy in store from him if he'd give me the 5% off that I would get from eBates by ordering online. No problem.

Pro Services Desk...i bought a bunch of fence material and basically saw the guy go through every item and punched in the lowest amount he could do without having to get some corporate level approval.

If you have the time to do this, take your list of materials to Lowe's and get it priced out. Take that list and price to Home Depot and ask if they can beat it. Then take that priced out list back to Lowe's and see if they can beat it. Keep doing that until one of the places can't beat the price.
