Wave petunias are what I use. I'm lucky that I have a drip system. They're shaded on one side and full sun on the other (they hang from the edge of our covered patio) so from time to time I turn the hanging baskets because the petunias grow towards the sun.

I was able to keep some bougainvilleas alive for quite a while a couple years back watering way too little. They seem tough.
