I have a ceiling can light fixture in the kitchen. The bulb essentially disengaged from the male fitting that screws into the socket. The remaining part of the light bulb is flush with the light socket.

Any tips on extracting the light bulb fitting?

Cut a potato in half and jam it into the broken socket, then turn the potato.

TURN THE POWER OFF AT THE FUSE BOX before the potatoe trick.

I have used needle nosed pliers successfully before. I hear a broomstick can work too.

The potato is a mess. Needle nose pliers and pull the handles open to make the ends push out on the base. Then turn slowly.

This.

I used to change light bulbs in our league scoreboards and was constantly dealing with this issue. The above procedure was the best way I found to fix the problem.

And yes, be sure the power is cutoff at the panel.

Pliers. Turned off at the switch is good enough unless you think someone might hit it while you are working. A switch is a switch.
