I'm replacing my 20 y/o AC and furnace system and John moore is asking for$2K more than ARS. Similar systesms, but Moores labor warranty is 10 years vs. ARS' 1.

11 vs 9 grand....

I only plan to live in the house another 3 to 5 years, but the system is on it's last leg and won't make or thought the summer..

I would say yes. We had a bad experience with ARS's plumbing group and they didn't stand behind their work. We told ourselves when we moved in we would only be here around 5-7 years...that was 15 years ago. Treat your house as if you will live the rest of your life there...then if you sell in 5 years, you can use the warranty as a selling point. We had John Moore install our ac and they did a great job.

Both are terrible choices.

Their extra cost is overhead. That's it.

Find a smaller rep & go with them. They'll get roughly the same discount from the supplier & you save bc it "should" cost them less to do business.

If you're in Houston, would be glad to provide a referral. He does residential but the bulk of his work is commercial bc he's a terrible salesman. He can't squeeze ppl out of their money like the reps at the bigger companies can/have to & he enjoys sleeping with a clear conscience.

All of this. Would've written roughly the same thing earlier, but didn't have time and was on mobile site.

Advertise advertise advertise you get to charge more cuz ppl think your the best... Not saying there isn't good ppl that work for them , but 7 out of 10 times they aren't so great .. (7 out of 10 is entirely made up ) but whoever you go with take about 20 off the price and tell them that's the price you'll pay. Most service businesses pick a number out of thin air.

Go read some reviews on John Moore, former workers from the change over in ownership are willing to air all the dirty laundry if you are willing to look for it.

Supposedly the current owner who bough the company from Mr. Moore is some how connected to the BBB and makes all their issues I away, this is just anectodal based upon my digging but there was a lot of the smoke out there when I was looking.

I recently had Aramendia come out and do some work and was pleased with them. Bonus: if your politics are conservative leaning they advertise on and are endorsed by some of the talk radio guys on 740 and 950 AM

How much money does Moore spend a year on advertising? He is on every commercial break of the morning news shows on every major network.

There's a reason those companies have to spend so much on advertising. Take the advice given earlier and re: a smaller supplier.

To add:

Make sure whatever company you select itemizes everything, then make sure you get it at time of install. Some include new float switches, condenser pad, insulation on the line sets outside, etc.

It sounds tedious, but they're charging you for EVERYTHING they would normally use for a brand new system. (Short of duct work, registers, etc.) Make sure you get everything new that you can.

Every manufacturer offers discounts or incentives if you replace everything in your system. The better the system, the higher the discount. The manu distributor typically picks up 1/2 & the installer picks up the other.

Ask your installer if they're participating in the Centerpoint Efficiency rebate program. Homeowners can get several $100 back for installing a complete system.

Thanks for the feedback. I got quotes from John Moore, ARS, and One Hour Install. After normalizing, they are all within about $750 bucks of each other. I expected them to shop each other, but all within 1% of each other is interesting. None really stood out as the better option b/c they all use the same equipment and I have no way of knowing who uses better techs.

Don’t John Moore and ARS typically send out sales reps and not technicians for their initial appointment?

OP – several people on this board use an Aggie connection called Arctic Air…I believe the guy’s name is Mike. Search for previous threads and give him a call.

there are a ton of smaller outfits that'll give you better service at a fraction of the cost.

the ARSs, John Moores, Village Plumbers all make their money on uninformed housewives. thats one thing that bugs me about the Michael Berry show - he plugs all of these great "listener/sponsors" then you find out gulf coast windows is 2x home depot. but since everyone trusts michael berry...

To the OP: no, they are just covering their overhead. There are plenty of great installers who work for themselves and are far cheaper. Jimmy with Care Services is one of these. I highly recommend him for his repair work, he has done great installation work on several friends and family, and plan on using him when my unit turns over.

I would recommend www.Articairtx.com. The installed a new A/C-Heater unit for me and did some duct work. Since then, I have twice had to call Mike Waters on the weekend for A/C issues. First time he and his brother showed up on Sunday and then I called him yesterday and he came and replace a blown capacitor.
