I have a ceiling fan that has started to make a grinding/scraping sound most of the time when it runs. Is there something I can do to fix this? Other than the noise, it works fine. It is a "builders choice" brand of fan. I would rather not replace it if I don't have to...

It could probably use some oil or other form of lubrication. Sometimes there'll be a small hole where you can usually pour in oil to keep the inner bearings lubricated. See if you can look up the model on the internet and find out if your fan has any accommodations for lubrication.

Have you checked to make sure all the screws on the blades are tight? I've had them come loose before and then the blade drops down and rubs on the housing causing a grinding noise.

I'll have to check the screws on the blades when I get home this evening. But as for adding oil, I can't find a place to put it. And no luck finding a manual online, but I did find out its a Harbor Breeze brand, not Builders Choice.

I just replaced a Harbor Breeze fan that was doing the same as you described. It started with that grinding noise and eventually failed to move at any setting. I believe it was one of their $99 special fans, but lasted over 5 years so no harm done.
