I don't know a whole lot about home improvement, but this seems kind of high.

I basically asked this guy (hes the BIL of a guy I went to A&M with) to add some recessed can LED lights to the front elevation of the house and some LED under cabinet lighting to the kitchen.

Heres the estimate.

Note the 650 bucks is not necessary as I have garden lights already, probably just need a bigger transformer and the LED light he was referring to.

Comments?

I'd avoid any pro electrician shopping at the HD...

The can light pricing isn't too bad. The bodies themselves will run around $20-40 each depending on the mfr plus the LED kits are around $50 each. The undercounter lighting seems pretty expensive, but that depends on the LF of wall cabinets you have. The dubis did their own (I believe) undercounter lighting on their remodel, so maybe they've got some better advice on that.

While it may be a PITA, always get 3 bids, check references and check license numbers for MEP guys.

What aggietaco said. I can get those same lights for 1/4 the cost at Dealer's.

He doesn't take into additional circuits, and for eight separate exterior lights plus an outlet, you need a new circuit with a GFCI breaker... or that outlet needs to be the first device in line and needs to be GFCI. Same with the under counter lights. Depending on where they are, they may be in a wet area. If they are... GFCI. And if he's tying into an existing kitchen circuit, expect your under counter lights to go out when you decide to make a piece of toast and the dishwasher's running at the same time.

And not nagging, but the outside work requires a permit, and the new circuit should definitely call for a permit.

Do NOT have that guy do the work.

The can lights in the soffit don't require GF protection. UC lights don't either.

It's a little high.

On your outside lighting is ther an attic above the soffit? Sometimes if it is hardy plank it can be a ***** and that may be what he is charging for.

Can lights are not that expensive, however a weatherproof trim is. I would do a little negotiating and that should probably by around 2200 - 2400.

Missed the led lighting removal in garden. 1600-1800

Where are you located? I have a good contact if you need an electrician in the Katy/ Cy Fair area. He won't be that high

1ags.

I don't think the guy is screwing you at all, but there is room for negotiation.

Those led can lights when I managed an electrical wholesale house we sold for 95.00 each. A contractor is going to mark those up to probably 120.00 each. His labor being 65.00 an hour is not far off.

I do think he is overcharging on the under cabinet lights.

The question I have are as follows:

Are the can lights on the exterior house already there and you just want replacements?

Do you currently have power to the underside of your cabinets and this guy/gal just needs to plug in or are they going to have to run wire?
Also, as far as led under cabinet lighting I would not recommend it. I think it will make your food look colorless and it will white wash the warm colors of a kitchen. In my opinion look at xenon under cabinet lighting.
