Anyone ever had this issue? If so, how do you stop it?

No idea other than closing the door or getting one that won't open without the collar magnet. Just consider yourself lucky...we had to stop leaving our pet door open at night when we had momma raccoons bringing their young ones in to munch on cat chow in our kitchen.

Sorry, that's funny. I'd never get a doggie door due to such issues. I wouldn't also have a dog that small. That's just me.

Put a strong magnet on the bottom of the flap and corresponding part of the frame.

Well, then personally, I wouldn't have a doggie door that large!

Consider yourself lucky. The fiancé freaked out.

Ok, sorry for the comments.

From a pest management standpoint -

1. You could put sticky traps right on the outside of the doggie door outdoors (not inside). Mice tend to like to scurry about against walls.
2. You could get live traps if they are already inside. Put a little peanut butter in there.. and they are easy to release.
3. Don't they make inserts for the doors that you can close at night? Or, do you want puppy to be able to do their business whatever time of the day?

In reality, having any open space at all is going to allow mice in. They will attempt to come in due to it being winter.. looking for nest areas, food, etc.

Remove their food source if possible.

Look into deterrents that they don't like (i.e. cat or some type of non-smelly chemical.. I'm assuming you could google this or go to the hardware store).

With a doggy door that is always open, you will potentially always have such a problem, but can be somewhat mitigated.

Another idea:

Electronic doggy door!

Other advice:

Rodent bait stations that look like rocks. We used them at the zoo.

Or, do what we did at the zoo. We caught a bunch of rat snakes and put them in our hay barn. Mouse and rat problem solved! Of course, it wasn't very funny (actually, it was!) walking by the spider monkey exhibit seeing all of them play with the poor snake that had gotten into their exhibit.

Friends had a cat door. Cats slept in their room. At 2:30am a cat fight commenced on their bed, cause a stranger kitty had used the cat door.

Thanks for the input zooguy.

So far it's only happened twice. Once when they started construction on the house behind us and the other day when it froze. We decided to put traps in a few inconspicuous areas around the house and close the door at night.

The gross part is that both times the mouse has fallen into our pool and drowned.

No, no. The first time we caught it and let it out in the back yard. The 2nd time it ran out on its own.
