We are looking to install a flagstone patio in our backyard and really like the look when the grass is growing between the stones. Has anybody done this before?

My main question, is do you just dig out where you want the stones to fit in, leaving the pre-existing grass?

Or do you dig out everywhere, layer with gravel, sand, then rock, and then fill in the "grass mortar" with grass seed?

Total area is about 10x20, and is solid grass now.

What kind of grass do you have? My landscaper put down zyosia and laid flagstone down as a walking path. I mow the zyosia to about a 1 - 2" height and it looks great.

I understand the look you are going for but I think the grass you select is what will make it look good or be a landscaping nightmare. I can't envision doing something like this with St. Augustine or bermuda.

It is st. augustine, but looking into other options like moss that's relatively maintenance free.

Did your landscaper dig everything out and put the flagstone down first and then plant the grass? Or plant the grass and then dig out just where the stones go?

My landscaper cleared the area, set the stone and then sodded in around it. I don't think I was clear in my last post but I just pieces of flagstone laid as stepping stones, not as a filled in tight knit patio surface.

St a and Bermuda have runners so that is why I say it would be a landscaping headache. Read up on zoysia, it is awesome.
