I spread some pesticide granules on the brown spots, but they still seem to be spreading. Any thoughts or advice on how to kill them?

It's probably Brown Patch (fungal) , not grubs.

Ya, most beetle grubs aren't going to bother your grass/grass roots.

I was under the impression that grubs could become a big issue and do exactly what he is describing?

I've had a similar problem. After trying a couple of different things, I dug up some spots and found grubs. I am pretty sure they are the culprit. I put down some insecticide that is supposed to take care of them, so I'll see if it helps.

The best way to diagnose grubs is to dig up some lawn with a shovel. They are easy to spot.

But treating grubs isn't as simple as putting pesticide down. Grubs need to be treated at a specific time of year (usually around June in Texas) - and it is best to use a chemical specific for grubs. They aren't active now and treating for them will do little or nothing.

If you have june bugs you're going to have grubs. They are pretty much always under your lawn.

The grub specific, grubicide, is usually what is recommended for treatment. I would be willing to bet that you have a different issue though.

Well, I've dug a little and seen some worms and tiny little balls that I assume are eggs. If it is root rot though, will spreading peat moss on the affected areas help? If not, any other suggestions?

If you have Brown Patch, will the StAug ever come back or do you have to rip up the sod and put down new pieces?

dig a 1x1x1 hole and if you have more than 5 then you have a grub infestation. Most grub damage occurs in Sept-Oct. After oct they go deeper in the soil till Mar-Apr. Treat in Spring w/ dylox. When you pull on runners they should come up easily and you could almost roll the grass like a carpet.

Yup, what Spicewood said, not much you can do about them now. Although digging them up and smashing them on the concrete is kind of fun, they make a satisfying "fwhap" when they hit the deck. From what I've read it's best to treat the yard about 2 weeks after you quit seeing the june bugs fly around.

.

It will be fine.

yes the st aug will come back next year but the vast majority of the time the brown patch will come back in that same area. Next spring keep an eye on your lawn and once you notice some circular areas pop up then hit it w/ a granular fungicide and reapply in 14 days.

Remeber that an easy way to tell if you have grub worms or not is by examining the pattern of dead grass. Grub worms tunnel so it should be easy to spot the pattern. If it is in patches it is the brown grass rot that is being described.

LOL. There are hundreds of thousands of nematodes in soil naturally per square foot 6" deep. I love seeing people buy that type of crap.
