I know there are numerous factors but generally how easy is it to add a plug in a wall for a tv?

I want to hang my tv and I want to add a flight right behind it so I don't see any wires. Planning on routing an hdmi down to wall to the component cabinet to a switch so I only have 1 input. What say you?

Adding an outlet depends on a few things. Interior or exterior wall?

Is there an existing outlet between the same studs as where you wan the new one?

There are several choices to choose from like this one

I ran the power cable down the wall with the hdmi. Ther is a plug behind the component cabinet. It was an interior wall so no insulation or anything

If you're on an interior wall and there are outlets on either side of where you want to do the install, you should be OK. You'll need to add a junction box where you tap into the existing power, unless you can make your way back to an outlet.

Also, running a standard power cable or extension cord through a wall cavity without proper sheathing is typically not recommended.

I've used this a few times.

The biggest problem with putting in a new electrical outlet behind the TV is that it's difficult to use a surge protector along with it. This kit allows you to use your surge protector while also giving a good wall plate to support a HDMI run.

Just buy the kit, sheathed in-wall electrical wire (14 AWG is OK), a CL2 HDMI cable (also from monoprice), and two old build electrical boxes.

Simple add on. Just fish a romex run behind wall from existing outlet to new hole behind TV. Pigtail the connection at the existing outlet. New box and outlet and you are in business.

Pretty simple add as long as the existing outlet is within the same stud cavity as the new one.

I will be doing this soon with something like what Aero Ag posted.

I am using this set.

The TV is not in a section of wall with an existing outlet. So connecting to an existing surge protector is a good choice for me. Leviton also makes a built-in surge protector outlet, about $30. I will be running two HDMI cables, and an optical cable through the wall.

and you can physically feed the new strech of romex into the existing box.

I gotta emphasize for those that tap into an existing box - I would NEVER run my expensive flat panel without a good surge protector.

I failed to account for the surge protector problem...

Will have to look into one of these solutions..

If you go with a recessed wall mount, you may have enough room for a surge protector. My Peerless mount has places to install a typical 2 gang outlet in the perimeter of the recessed box, so I have room to install a 2 outlet surge protector. Or, like Spicewood mentioned, there are surge protected outlets available.

I fully agree with the surge protection for the panel. Have this on all of my outlets that I have added...

You would also be covered using the Monoprice setup above.

A Leviton surge outlet:

HD sells a similar one for less, but they only seem to have the tamper-resistant ones.

Thanks for the link LOAD, might have to look into that to replace the Belkin I'm currently using. It's probably pretty close to it end of life.

Surge protection is like bubble wrap.
