Looking to get a home alarm installed.

I remember reading an old thread that recommended some companies but can't find it. One company in particular (can't remember) had fairly cheap monitoring rates.

I pay $31.38/month with ADT under the USAA plan.

I have a buddy that deals with ADT at very good rates. If you're interested, I'll post my email. He's out of Dallas but works with clients all over the Houston/BCS area.

I've got a meeting with a Vivent (APX) salesman tomorrow but after reading their reviews I'm a little gun shy.

Do all alarm companies make you enter into long term contracts?

damn i didn't know usaa is partnered with adt. I think i may switch.. just because I like to have everything possible with usaa!

I use asg. it's about $32.

Where are yout located? Smith Thompson covers DFW, Houston, and SA ... and they are $17/month. We were able to drop our landline also, as their system works great over a wireless connection.

I've used Brinks and ADT, and ST is the fastest, most reliable response I've had - they usually call me within 20-30 seconds of a triggered alarm. Brinks (are they still around?) usually took about 3-5 minutes to call, and ADT was spotty: sometimes I got calls, sometimes I didn't get a call at all.

Had ADT @ $30/mo. Realized we weren't ever using it, so I called to disconnect. Was immediately offered a reduction to $19.99/month. Told a friend who also has ADT @ $30/mo what had happened in my phone call. She called and they dropped her to $19.99/month. Not bad for an easy three minute phone call!

Cobalt - alarm installers that offer subsidized or free equipment usually require a 1-3 year contract. I had a system installed recently that is all wireless and did not pay anything up front, however, I do have a 3 year contract now that I'm not ecstatic about.

We use smith thompson and love them. They are half the price and provide the same service. They are pretty cheap to have a whole system installed and YOU actually own the equipment (unlike Brinks and ADT where you "rent" it from them). Also, it is MUCH cheaper to have the cell phone service installed by ST than to rent it monthly from the others.
