Wanting to get rid of the ugly gold door knobs/locks but thought maybe it would be possible to paint the current ones ad save a few hundred bucks. Anyone tried it? The current ones are in good shape except the gold finish.

Spray paint?

they show it being done on home shows all the time....lots of bright golds becoming the brushed nickel or the darker oil rubber finishes and they do this with light fixtures as well

they gently buff up the surface with steel wool or very fine sand paper then spray paint them

Thanks, figure I will give it a try...worst that can happen is they look awful and get tossed in the trash, where they were going to end up anyway.

If you try to redo some, I would love to hear how it turns out. This is one of the projects on my to do list.

Rustoleum makes some great metallic finishes.

My wife spray painted all cabinet pulls in our house to a dark finish. After 2.5 years some of them are starting to show the gold finish beneath them, but usually you have to look closely. The wear might be more noticeable sooner on a larger iterm like a door handle.

Worth a shot thought. Worst case in 3 months you see the paint wearing off and you go buy some new ones.

Recently remodeled the master bedroom and painted several items with brushed nickel spray paint - door knobs, hinges and the gold metal trim around the mirrored closet doors. Didn't bother with roughing the surface, but did spray everything with a gray primer first. Also sprayed a coat of glossy lacquer on the door knobs to give them a greater sheen and seal them better. All in all, I was very pleased with the way it turned out and definitely saved a bunch of money.

Used Rustoleum spray paint on fixtures in our half bath. Turned out great. It's been about five years now and am starting to see a little wear in a couple of places. Half bath gets a good deal of use, so I'm pretty pleased with how it has held up.
