There are piles of dirt everywhere. All over the place. The backyard has areas that are soft and "give" under foot thanks to the tunnels.

How do I best get rid of them?

Not sure it matters that much, but are you sure its moles and not gophers. I have had a full on war with moles for some time now, but my dad has been in battle with gophers. I have literally tried everything. The little traps where you pull the spring and it shoots down, the solar deterrant. Someone even told me an old wives tale about gum and I think I put someones kid that owns juicy fruit through college. I almost thought about filling the tunnels with propane and igniting. However, the tides have now turned since I picked this up at tractor supply.

What I do is press down all of the tunnels one day. Next day, see which tunnel is the "active" tunnel (the one that is raised up again. Slighty press down a little on the tunnel where you are going to set the trap, that way when they raise it up again, they set off the trap.

Put a stick of juicy fruit gum down each hole. I kid you not, I hear that this actually works. They cannot digest the gum and die.

I actually think it might be both. The moles are here for sure because I caught one "in the act" of digging a new tunnel, but every once in a while I run across a "naked" entrance that more resembles a gopher hole. Those are further away from the house and haven't been a big issue. There are about 30 mole hills within ~50 feet of the house.

Dachshund owners should start a Rent-A-Weenie service. If anything, people would pay you for your dog to get worn out.

And yes. I know how bad that sounds...

Use those spring loaded spikes. The ones that look like an indiana jones prop. The trick it to set two bricks leaning on it as weight to push down on the spikes when its tripped.

I fought rodents of many sorts in the Golf Course Business for years. Probably the best method for getting rid of them is noise. Any kind of vibration going into the ground will run them off. They look like hell, but a small 6 foot windmill staked to the ground creates enough vibration in the ground to run them off. The trick is to keep annoying them. I had very little success with traps or poison. A pest control company will have a poison that will emit a toxic gas as the pellet absorbs moisture from the ground. They work, but will kill a pet if it sticks its nose in the hole.
