What's the better option for leveling out your yard? I've heard sand is bad because it "draws in ants" but I figure ants are already all over I my non-sandy yard. Thoughts?

I could very well be wrong, but I think sand is better to use if you don't want to kill the grass and level it slowly. Top soil is better if you are going to kill grass in the process that needs to be replanted.

Not 100% sure though.

How unlevel is it? If you just want it alittle smoother, use a good topdressing and apply it more heavily in the low spots.

It's pretty lumpy. We ended up getting a soil mix. I'm sure my grass will enjoy it. Two cubic yards for $60.

Top soil periodically in low spots as it has time to grow up on top.
You can also mix in some sand, but compost mix will not do as well.

Top soil can be VERY expensive, depending on how large your job may be. Most people here use sandy loam - sort of a mixture of the two and far less expensive.
