I need to hire someone to add some insulation in my attic (I recently discovered that there is absolutely zero insulation above my front bedroom...someone got lazy during construction). I was looking at doing it myself, but I have a newborn baby that needs to sleep and thanks to me working nights, there's just not a lot of time for me to get it done...

If anyone works in the Frisco/Little Elm area, let me know.

I got the best quote from Williams Insulation when I had it done in the Spring.

If you're just going with batting, you and two of your buddies and a case of beer could knock it out in probably less than an hour.

Absolute best time of year, weather-wise, to tackle a project like this...

You can get blown insulation from Lowes or Home Depot and rent the blower from Home Depot and do an attic in 4 hours total – from getting the blower at Home Depot to taking it back. It is not noisy and you are in control of how well the job is done. You will have a little better insulation coverage with blown over batt.

Home Depot has Owens Corning. That has phemaldehyde. They say it’s not an issue but Johns Manfield, which is sold at Lowes, does not have it. You have a baby, do the Johns Manfield. The blower rental at Home Depot is more expensive if you don’t buy their insulation. I went with Johns Mansfield. If you buy in bulk check with the guys at McKinney lumber. You have to buy a pallet, but it is 2/3s the price of Lowes. Having extra in the attic for the same price doesn’t hurt. McKinney lumber will deliver it to your house. Then rent the blower from Home Depot. You need a friend to load the machine, which is outside the house. It is easy work on both ends.

Let me know if you decide to go that route and I’ll talk you through it.

When I did it, I found that it was only about $100 more to have it done with the quote I got versus going through the hassle of buying and transporting more than I needed, renting and transporting the machine, doing the work, taking everything back, then trying to sell the bags I did not need. No, it is not that hard, but it would have been a lot more hassle than what I did for the $100 or so difference.

I would second the making sure you get exactly what you want. When I ordered I specified that I wanted 19 (R-49 for the JM fiberglass) inches throughout. When the guys got done with the first attic area they were somewhat below that. I politely but firmly pointed it out. To their credit they were slightly over on the second attic area, and went back and touched up the first. Overall, they did a good job. Like anything it did require some supervision.
