you could always use a downspout guard. It goes around the metal:

I would buy the flexible plastic things (usually green or brown, round in the middle and square to fit the gutter at the end) and put them on. You could leave them compressed. They would cover the sharp end.

They also have a plastic version of the elbows that probably is not as sharp.
