Buddy (who rents the house to me) had the house sprayed fairly recently but we still seem to have a fire ant problem- INSIDE the house. Have sprayed them countless times with all sorts of stuff inside, they just keep coming back. Have someone from Terminex coming in the morning, lets hope they do their job this time!! (as they just sprayed fairly recently).. Anything else that could be causing this?? House is in very good shape, no food around, etc..

It is very typical for fire ants to build their mounds inside the walls during the summer, you usually can still find where they're getting in on the outside, but it's not a guarantee.

Part of the problem with why they are coming back is that the chemical that was used will only kill the ones that come in contact with it, which is typically fine when you can treat the mound. However, since there isn't an obvious mound, they need to use something that will allow it to track back to the colony, bait or spray.

Best of Luck!

MrJonMan,

My folks have a waterfront place on lake livingston. They have the worst fireant problem. My dad just does the mount treatment thing.

Are there any better options? Is the stuff you broadcast on the yard worth a darn?

There is a product called Top Choice (broadcast granule) that is phenomenal, and it was a restricted product, only available to us licensed folk, but then it became available to the public, and now it is going back on the restricted list.

If you can still find some it's what you want,it is a little slower to work, but within 3mths all mounds are gone, and then they stay gone for a year, minimum.

It really is a superb product. As an added bonus it will control fleas/ticks for 3 months as well as mole crickets.

I have found this problem recently the hard way. I got out of the shower and put on a pair of boxers, only to realize that they were covered in ants. I jumped back in the shower to get them off of me. When I looked in the drawer, everything was covered in ants and I just dumped it in the wash. Still angry at them.

I hate 'em and take pleasure in killing 'em. Often the mound just relocates though...

Ugh, I just found fire ants trailing along our baseboards a couple days ago. I am pretty sure they are coming in through our back door, although now they are in my son's room and I'm not sure why.

Does anyone know if a borax or boric acid homemade bait will work on fire ants? I am really really a freak about spraying chemicals inside of our house. I'll do whatever on the outside, but I don't do chemicals inside. My little ones are too little.

MrJonMan, I'm guessing you wouldn't go up that far North huh? THANKS!

Another poster said they put on the poison and the mound just moves which is exactly what happens to my pop. The soil up there is usually pretty damp and they water alot so the ants just love it there. He is too stubborn to try anything else ie like the "over and out" etc.

Yea, lol, Livingston is a tad far for us....but Yea, 99% of the time the mounds are going to simply move. The bait will kill off a good chunk of the mound but they will realize what is going on and form a satellite mound, and simply relocate.

the chemical you are looking for a fipronil, if you can find a broadcast that contains it, BUY BUY BUY!
