I think I killed my grass

How long do you want to ignore this user?
In an effort to squash the 18 million weeds that are in my front lawn (recently bought a foreclosed home), I put down Scotts Bonus S. Problem is, I have bermuda grass (well, I guess I did have Bermuda grass).

I'm kicking myself. I went to Home Depot and looked for weed killer. Saw the pretty picture and the Scotts name with Bonus S and "Southern weed and feed". Got all excited about having the nice green lawn on the picture of the package. Spread it out (not a lot, only about 2-3 pounds) on my relatively small front lawn. As I was watering (as per instructions) I read in super small size 4 font: not for use on bermuda grass. I start to panic and start googling around. Turns out I think I just killed my lawn.

Any advice? I think I used less than I should have and only watered the area for 3 minutes. I'm so stupid.

I guess it's a "wait and see". Problem now is that even if I wanted to replant, I've saturated the soil with Bonus S, so I can't even plant anything else. HELP!

Water the crap out of it so that it is diluted. You might be okay since grass is still dormant.

Yeah, I watered yesterday and today for about 5 minutes. I'm kicking myself. I looked over the bag again and can't believe they only mention to not use it is buried in the back in small fine print. You'd think there would be a warning: DON'T USE THIS ON BERMUDA pasted on the front.

Yeah, Bonus S kills it. I've just recently learned that it is what most St. Augustine grass people use to kill invading bermuda.

helgs,

Your bermudagrass will be fine. The active ingredient in the product is atrazine, and many of us in the golf course maintenance field use it on our bermudagrass roughs. I think you will actually be pleased with the weed control results assuming you applied it at the correct rate. 2-3 pounds isn't much, unless your lawn is really small. The reason it says don't use on bermuda is to cover their arse. In 1 out of about 20 years, you may see some damage on bermudagrass in years where it gets very warm early, followed by a hard freeze. That doesn't look to be the case this year. You should end up with a very clean lawn in about 3-4 weeks.

I used to use Round Up on my bermuda lawn. You are probably good to go as long as it is still dormant.

GrassAg95, wow thanks! It's reassuring to hear that from a grass pro. My lawn is about (completely guessing) 500 sq ft. I weighed the bag so see exactly how much I put down and the bag weighs 6.8 pounds. That means I used 3.2 pounds on the lawn. I live in a cookie-cutter neighborhood where the houses are close together. My back yard is a lot bigger. I haven't put any Bonus S on that.

I have used Bonus S on my yard and the small portion that is bermuda was no worse for wear.

I hope it all goes well. I'll keep this thread updated if I kill my grass!

I have bermuda invading my st. augusting. How do I kill it? I've been pulling some out here and there but that is a huge pain in the rear.

Cut your St. Aug. tall this summer and it will choke out the bermuda, the St. Aug. will shade it and bermuda doesn't like shade.

I just put Bonus S down yesterday on my front lawn... probably a mistake.

I just dug a bunch of flower beds, and used a rotary-spreader to spread it around (though I tried to miss the flower beds). I think I did a good job avoiding the new beds, and keeping it on the lawn. I then used the cone-setting on the hose to water it down (as per the instructions). I just hope the miniscule amount that did get into the beds (petunias, roses, a few shrubs, and a tree) don't kill everything... I would be pissed

And since I was the OP on this thread, I guess I'll update. The grass isn't dead. Trying to grow up now. It's coming in green!
