Good luck to this guy ever getting another golf game or being approved to join any golf club. Maybe time to take up another sport?
This was similar to the story told in Rick Reiley's book Missing Links. Hilarious book by the way. The hole in one prize is a new truck. Golfer 1 is friends with the group in front of him. Golfer 1 needs a new truck. He gives them one of his marked balls and tells them to leave it in the hole at the Par 3'before his group gets get there. Only witness is a couple ladies at the Par 3 tee box who aren't paying attention. Golfer 1 hits the ball as far as he can and his group starts jumping up and down celebrating. The ladies say "well I guess you won but we have to witness it so let's go check the hole". Lo and behold the marked ball from golfer 1 is in there and golfer gets his truck.
He has since resigned his membership at the club. Ultimate d-bag

Yeah. That's all he'll ever be known for. Makes me think of the old "but you F one goat" joke.
And the old "I'm not a cheater and just made a stupid mistake" defense I don't buy. This was way too premeditated and planned out to be a stupid mistake. This dude has been cheating at everything he can find a way to cheat at his whole life.

How much was the pot? Are we talking a huge sum? I wouldn't think so. It's pathetic either way, but it's an even crazier story if we are talking about $2k or so.

And even if he had technically gotten away with it, half the members of his own club would forever be suspicious and give him the stink eye every time they saw him. That's just a wild trade to make for a few thousand, even if you succeed.
I read some story that the pot was only $1000 or so. Certainly not some huge amount.

Yep. This is the guy who tells his group they're falling behind pace a bit so he's going to run up and hit his ball out of sight past the green to keep things moving and just lobs it towards the hole.
He's also never lost a ball in the rough/woods when nobody in the group saw exactly where it landed.
I was told by a member of the club that there is a season-long hole-in-one pool that was up to approx $6,000 and there was a separate member-member event pot of $1,000 tp $2,000. Also, that score probably would have won a skin for the team for the member-member event. Apparently nothing was paid out as suspicion grew quickly due to shady circumstances. What a fat cheating loser!
Moronically bold. My dad had a story from the early 80s about a coworker he would occasionally play with. Notorious cheater, known for magically finding his ball that was almost surely lost, shaving a stroke here and there, and the little crap that cheaters do. But one round he pulls off something similar for an eagle 2. He drives his ball well right so he's alone. My dad from a distance sees him swing but doesn't see the ball flight, so a bit odd but not unusual to not pick up the flight of someone else's shot. This guy "finds" his ball in the hole, celebrates eagle.
Well, here's where it all unravels. This guy had arranged for the group ahead to leave his ball in the hole. Problem is they think it's just a funny prank, so at the end of the round, a couple are waiting at the clubhouse to have a laugh with my dad's group. Oops. Busted. Tries to play it off but my dad knows he never would have said anything if the group ahead didn't spoil it.
