Chandler Phillips is ON FIRE. Sitting at -6 for the round, -11 overall through 14. Tied for second overall. 1st in the field in the following categories: SG around the green, putts per GIR, feet of putts made. 2nd in SG putting.

59 60

He had a great round, you can't take that away from him.

But shooting 59 on a par 71 course is like shooting 60 on a par 72 course.

Weird because I could have sworn he took 59 strokes and that's what the post, and all the stories, said. Didn't know the definition of a 59 was "59 strokes on a par 72."

You a golfer?

Because if you were, you'd get what I was saying.

Yes, I'm a golfer. And any golfer knows that pooping on a 59 on the PGA Tour because it wasn't the arbitrary "right" kind of 59 is about as lame as it gets.

I literally said , "He had a great round, you can't take that away from him."

Yup, a 59 is 59, but it's a bit tongue in cheek to claim a 59 on a par 71 is as legit as a 59 on a par 72.

A 59 is a 59? Because you literally crossed out 59 and wrote 60 in its place.

Also, you're sitting there arguing when literally no one brought up anything about the par on the course. We just pointed out that a 59 was shot. Not sure why it upset you to see it reported that someone shot a 59 when someone shot a 59.

To be honest, 59 on a par 71 or 70 is more impressive to me than a 59 on a par 72. Par 3's and 4's typically have a higher scoring averages than par 5's, so the fact that he did it with one less par 5 to gain strokes is more impressive.

If you were a golfer, then you would understand.

The course is typically a par 72 but is played as a par 71 for the 3M. Not sure which par 5 is converted to a par 4 for the tourney, but one of them is.

It is interesting that when a 59 happens now, it typically doesnt lead to a win. The last 8 have come by people who didnt win. The most recent being 2017 Justin Thomas at Sony.

Also, as many have pointed out, course set up and equipment getting out of control has led to it becoming much more common. From origin of PGA Tour to 1999 there were 3. Since then theres been 13 since 2010.

59 is still 59. Some are just a bit more impressive.

Managed to jinx Si Woo Kim out of one at the Byron Nelson in May. He gets to -12 (par 71) with a birdie on 17 while we are walking toward the exit by 18. We veer off to sit right behind the 18 green to see him make par and lock up 59. Instead, his approach goes a hair long and settles right next to us, his pitch checks up too quick, and he misses a 12 foot par putt. Shoots 60

Ironically and relevant to this thread, before 2026, #18 at TPC Craig Ranch was a par 5 for the tournament and it still is a par 5 for members. But they changed it to a par 4 just for the 2026 Nelson.

Yup, this is what I was trying to convey before I inadvertently ruffled feathers...

My best round ever was a 72 at Gleannloch Farms (par 71).
My second best Round was a 73 at Longwood (par 72).

When asked about my personal best, I always say that I've shot 1-over a couple times.
I never say "71", because it's not the same measuring stick.

I never called it crap.

But, yes - I'd call it a 58*.

y'all are funny, so serious...

Well, you posted it was a 60, which it wasn't, and is really what ruffled feathers. 59 is still 59. Some of these PGA events invent their own par by calling 5's 4's anyway, as does the US Open oftentimes

You are still saying pretty ridiculous stuff with the 58*.

Any round in the 50s is amazing because they broke 60. Doesn't matter what par was (as long as it was a real course, which I imagine everyone agrees is at least par of 70). Also doesn't matter if it was 57, 58 or 59. The key achievement is breaking 60. Just like a duffer breaking 100. It doesn't matter by how much, it matters that they did it.

Now, I assume the point you were trying to make is that not every round below 60 is equal. That is fair. I think a 13 under 59 is more impressive than an 11 under one.

The key thing is that any round in the 60s is not in the same conversation as any round below 60.

That isn't including context, as most of the time breaking 60 happens in second rate, easy tournaments. The second anyone breaks 60 in a major, it is without question the greatest round to ever break 60.

I take the stance that the hardest, longest par 4 on a typical par 71 course likely plays as difficult or more difficult than the easiest par 5 on a typical par 72 course. (I haven't looked through PGA stats to confirm)

So, in reality, the accomplishment is the same regardless of which subjective par score you attribute to that hole. 12-under on a 71 or 13-under on a 72 are essentially the same thing.

Per ChatGPT, I might have embellished a little. Hardest par 4s on par 71 courses average 4.3-4.4. Easiest par 5s on par 72 courses average 4.4-4.5.

"That's one reason many golf statisticians argue that a 59 on a difficult par-71 course is essentially every bit as impressive as a 59 on a par-72. The missing par-5 birdie opportunity is largely offset by removing one of the course's easiest holes rather than simply subtracting one stroke from par." -ChatGPT

Just as a matter of math, -13 is better than -11. But if you're on the type of heater you have to be on to shoot 59, those 2 extra par 5s are almost assuredly birdies. You could even look at it as a slight advantage as it's 2 more chances for eagles I would say the difference between 59s is negligible.
