I've heard Aviara is great.
I played down in Poway at Maderas and it was really good.

I really enjoyed Aviara. Definitely spendy but I've maintained that they have maybe the best set of par 3s I've ever played.
And 18 is a classic Arnold Palmer hole.

Lived in area for 9 years. Aviara is best public course imo. Torrey second and then maderas. Crossings is not bad but gets more traffic. Journey at pechanga is little further out but an awesome course too.
Maderas is an interesting track. Very nice, challenging.
You can get on Torrey but you will probably pay a premium to do so; it is worth it.

Was just on Facebook seeing whats new with my friends in New Mexico so was really confused why you wanted golf courses near Carlsbad when you were gonna be in San Diego, then I fully read the thread title. Makes much more sense now
Aviara. If you do Torrey, I'd actually recommend North. Just as pretty (even moreso) and more fun. Also easier to get on
