Caytana Leads Aggies on 36 Hole Day at GameAbove Invitational

ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. -- The No. 4 Texas A&M women's golf team was in second after 36 holes Monday at the GameAbove Invitational and were led by Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio who was tied for third individually.

"A lot of good things happened today," Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "It takes a lot of local knowledge to get around this golf course. I thought we did a good job of using slope to get balls close to the holes. We had some speed control issues on the greens, but we did a lot of great stuff. I am excited that we have a chance tomorrow. Anything can happen in team golf. The way that course was playing in the afternoon, was the way that the national championship feels like in San Diego. This is a great experience for us."

The Maroon & White (+1) were behind No. 2 USC (-13), who hosted the tournament, by 14 shots after two rounds of play. The Aggies were ahead of No. 3 Oregon (+9), No. 30 Eastern Michigan (+9) and No. 26 SMU (+11) to round out the top five. Texas A&M also had a 19-stroke advantage over No. 11 UCLA.

Fernandez Garcia-Poggio shot a 1-over 73 in the first round but followed that up with a stellar 4-under 68 to bring her 36-hole score to 3-under 141. The junior was even par thru 12 holes in the second round and drained three birdies in four holes to secure the score.

Brynn Kort and Sky Sudberry both claimed spots in the top 10, placing tied for ninth heading into Tuesday's action at 1-over 145. Natalie Yen held onto a share of 13th at 2-over 146. Vanessa Borovilos rounded out the lineup tied for 26th.

The Aggies return to the course at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday for the final round. The event will be live streamed on CGN's Youtube Channel. Live stats for the event can be found at:

The Aggies finished in 2nd place as a team, with a tourney best round of -11 today. They finished at -10. USC won the tournament finishing with a -22. Was kind of a home course advantage for USC and UCLA and USC really took advantage of it, shooting under par all three days.

The Aggie team scores for the three rounds were +3, -2, -11. They sure did figure out the course after the first day!

Individually, USC also got the win with a -11 score.

Aggies ended up:

4th - Cayetana, -4
5th - Natalie, -2
T6 - Brynn, E
T6 - Vanessa, E
T14 - Sky, +2

I will post the press release later today.

No. 4 Aggies Finish Runner-up at GameAbove Invitational

ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. -- The No. 4 Texas A&M women's golf team lit up the Rolling Hills Country Club Tuesday after firing an 11-under 277 as a team to wrap up the GameAbove Invitational with a runner-up finish.

"Really proud to have had the lowest round of the week by any team on USC's home course," Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "You need to play this place more than once to feel comfortable out there. We got better each round with some great adjustments. We have been able to test ourselves against the best, and next time we take the course in Fort Worth we will do that again. We put ourselves in position to get better and to prepare for postseason play."

The Aggies' 11-under 277 round was tied for the eighth lowest in program history. It was the lowest round by any team in the field this week, including tournament champion No. 2 USC (-22). The Maroon & White shot 10-under 854 as a squad. Third place was No. 3 Oregon (+11), who the Aggies beat by 21 shots.

Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio was the low golfer for the Aggies, turning in a 54-hole score of 4-under 212. The Spaniard shot a 1-under 71 to complete the week. Natalie Yen finished one shot back of Fernandez Garcia-Poggio at 3-under 213. It was the best performance of the season for the freshman, coming in solo fifth.

Vanessa Borovilos fired a blistering 5-under 67 in the final round to take home a share of sixth. Borovilos came into the day having not been a counting score in either of the first two rounds Monday. The Canadian rose 20 spots on the individual leaderboard during the last 18, the largest jump of any golfer in the field.

Brynn Kort logged her fourth top-10 outing of her first collegiate season. Kort also tied for sixth with Borovilos with an even-par 216. Sky Sudberry took home a piece of 14th after shooting a 2-over 218 thru 54 holes. All five golfers finished in the top 15, the only team to accomplish the feat this week.

The Aggies return to the course March 23-24 at the Charles Schwab Women's Collegiate Challenge at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth.
