I took up golf in earnest in October at 65. Retired in early December and have been playing at least twice a week since . I took a few 30 min lessons and it helped a lot but I'm still shanking a lot of shots off the tee box and I don't consistently get the ball in the air. In short, there's humongous opportunity for improvement to say the least. Putting is pretty good. Everything else is hit and miss. Particularly notice my control of the direction I hit the ball is … well… awful. I hook a lot more than I slice and I do one or the other much more than I hit the ball straight.

What books or info sources do ya'll recommend to help me get more competent and consistent . Not opposed at all to more lessons but I'd like to try to incrementally improve on my own first .

I have gotten firmly entrenched in the instagram flood of golf reels. There is actually some good stuff there but it can be overwhelming. I already have a decent foundation so it may be a little more difficult for you.

I have used www.topspeedgolf.com previously. I forget what the annual subscription is (approx a couple of lessons from a club pro) but their program is pretty well set up. At least in my opinion. With your available time that you have now I think it is a good avenue for your mission.

Look up Rick Schiels on YouTube. He has a lot of great videos. His break down on the mechanics of the swing is pretty good.

Three classics.

Theres a lot more to golf than just learning how to swing. A lot more.

I incorporate some of this guys stuff in my swing, closed to target, in to out swing, you will find some hooks but easier to work out than a slice. He's a bit unconventional but could help if you are struggling with a big slice. Book I would recommend is The 4 Foundations of Golf by Jon Sherman.

Where do you live? If you are up to it, I don't mind playing a few rounds with you to look at/ give pointers on your swing, equipment, grip, practice drills, etc. Former golf coach willing to help. Thinking about going out today before the spell of cold weather coming up.
Lots of good practice drills and fundamentals videos on YouTube.
Enjoy your time out on the course!

I'm in Huntsville. Playing mostly at Westwood Shores in Trinity because Bearkat is not an easy course and I lose a lot of balls in the rough . We also get a break on green fees at Westwood because we store our Travel trailer out there. The course at Westwood is also not very crowded and the people are super nice . That helps for slow players like me and my wife.

Appreciate the offer and also appreciate all the suggestions here.

Interested to hear why

I read this a few years back when I made a commitment to improve my game and work on things. I took away a lot from the book and it worked wonders.

Some of it is a lot to digest so I didn't implement everything that's in the book but I think it does a good job of breaking things down and setting up a solid foundation.

I recommend reading it

Also recommend Putting Out of Your Mind by Bob Rotella...Great read about the mental side of putting (and also the game in general) that helped me improve on the greens.
