I am playing Pebble Beach Friday for the first time. Still a relatively beginner golfer as I just got seriously into it two years ago. Any tips I should know? Should I bring cash to tip the caddies? Are caddies necessary if we have a golfcart?

This is the top rated public course in America and these questions are just the tip of the iceberg of what you need to know to play there. I should take your place since I know what I'm doing.

Kidding, very jealous, have the time of your life and report back please.

Not to pry but is there a physical condition that's requiring you to take a cart? If not I can't imagine why someone would ever ride at Pebble vs walk

Walk!! Do not ride.

The beauty of Pebble is the walk.

Don't worry about your score, just keep up and enjoy the scenery.

Bad news is there's a strict dress code. Denim is required so make sure to dress accordingly.

Good news is it's now BYOB so bring a cooler to throw in the cart and some cold ones.

No physical condition so I will try to convince my friend to walk the course. Can't wait for all the scenic views!

I assume you know it's cart path only at all times.

Walking is definitely the way to go IMO.

Just found that out. Seems like the likely option for us. Also made reservations at the Bench for after our round. Really looking forward to this!

It will be the most spectacular 5 hour round of golf you'll ever play.

Might want to pack a flask for warmth

Lots of bunkers.

Check with your caddy on hole number eight maximum distance, don't hit it too long!

Book a meal at the clubhouse for after your round, gorgeous view!

Cart path only and being a newbie hack, you will actually walk further with a cart than you would walking. You'll also torture the poor groups behind you going back and forth, back and forth. Get a caddy - one can loop both of your bags. Tip in cash. Enjoy the walk.

Yeah you should tip. Especially if the caddie is decent to good ($50ish)

I'm staying at the resort and playing Pebble and Spyglass next August. Looking forward to your report!

I played Pebble a few years ago. Get a caddy and walk. My caddy was an older guy and he knew so much history it was fascinating to listen to him. He would point out the houses where famous people lived and had tons of great stories about who he had caddied for. I tipped him a hundred. If your wife or significant other is with you, rent a cart for her and let her ride along with your group. I did this and it was great. We packed a cooler with wine (for her) and beer (for me) so I could have a few during the round.

Edit to add: There is a live cam on 1 tee box and 18 green. Send the link to your buddies along with your tee time so they can watch and be properly jealous.

Walk and tip at least $50 - $60. Don't get just super-focused on your golf. Look around as you're walking and enjoy what you're experiencing.

I played Pebble and Spyglass on my honeymoon. Had a cart because the wife rode along, but would certainly have walked if that wasn't the case.

I did not have a caddy, but the guys I played with did at Spyglass and he willingly helped me out on reads and recommendations all day long. At the end of the round I offered him $100. He refused, but I talked him into taking $20. If he was my caddy, it felt like $50 might be about right.

Make sure and take two balls to the first tee. Plenty of spectators, and your blood will be pumping. I hozzled my 4iron straight into the fence down the fairway on the right side with my first. Walked away with a bogey on 1.

It's a blast. Enjoy it.

Hitting the opening tee shot at PB is easily the most nervous I've ever been over a golf ball.

It has been 5-6 years since I was there but we had a fantastic caddie. He went by Bruiser. If you get the option, see if Bruiser is still there.

$50-60 for a bag carrying caddie? That is extremely low and I bet is below their minimum. I would say $100 minimum. And more like $200 if they are good. This is assuming single bag caddy. If one caddy double bagging, Id still say $80-100 a man.

This is absolutely the way to go….
The scenery on the walk is almost worth the price of admission. Having your wife along in a cart with cocktails and taking pictures is a great option you won't regret. There will also be a few times you can jump on the cart when convenient later in the round to save your legs.
Agree on the compensation for any caddie touching your bag… $100 for the loop is really the minimum in an environment like that even for a double bag. Cost of living is ridiculous out there and most of those guys bust their ass to make sure you have the round of your life.
Enjoy EVERY step!

Are you talking tip only or fee + tip combined?

At Pebble you pay the caddie fee to the pro shop and tip directly to the caddie.

Currently fees on their website are $155 for a single bag caddie and $210 for double bag.

Yeah, seems like paying for the caddy is upfront and even on their website they recommend a $50-75 tip per bag.

I keep seeing the cocktails and stuff. I would definitely like a few beers to settle my nerves. Do they have beverage carts? Or do you just load up before the round and at the turn?

In what world is someone tipping $200 on top of paying $150 caddy fee?

There are beverage carts. There is no trip to the clubhouse at the turn. True links. Takes you out down the coast (thru 10) and then 11 brings you back

They have a halfway house that you will pass twice, I think it's at 10 tee and 14 tee.

There is a temporary type tent that has beverages that you will pass after 3 and before 17.

There was also a beverage cart that was out there though I think it might stay parked around 8.

You won't go thirsty but you might go broke as things aren't cheap out there!

yeah, my bad. didn't realize they are taking a caddy fee up front. Never seen that at pebble, bandon, whistling, anywhere really. Guess they had too many people trying to cheap out on the caddy once they kept raising and raising the greens fees.

Walk and hit the ball. Write down whatever caddie tells you to. Then drink for hours in Tap Room.

Hate to say it, but that is basically the going rate and what is "expected" at Pebble Beach Golf Links resort. Yes, the resort charges $150 or so caddie fee…. Of which, the looper probably gets half and then lives on gratuities from there. So, a $100 tip is not out of the question for a $800 round of golf.
And, get ready some additional pain from the beverage cart…. Last time out there , a double Bloody Mary ran a smooth $70.
Just laugh and have a phenomenal time…. It's only money.

Double-bag caddy fee will be $210, then you should tip $50-75 per bag. So $300-350 all in for one caddy to cover both of you, which would be the norm
DannyDuberstein

Also, not sure about your bag, but they like a light-weight single strap bag. Be prepared for them to just put your clubs in a generic bag they have on site. So if you don't have a carry bag with the type of strap that can be carried on one shoulder, make sure you have your necessities ready in baggies, etc. for a quick transfer that avoids forgetting something.

Pinehurst and Pebble use the pay the pro shop model. Everywhere else I've played and used a caddie you paid them direct as they were treated as independent contractors.

Yeah, Pinehurst does it too. And Spanish Bay, which is part of Pebble.
