Well, that settles it. I'll be dropping my daughter off at a public course all summer long, and tell her to play 45 holes a day without any pressure. LPGA Tour, we'll see you in a few years.

I think you missed the part where he said

(1) Let them play as much or as little as they want
(2) Let them have fun on the course even if it's not golf
(3) Bring them home before they get sick of being there
(4) Use part of your time for quality 1-on-1 time after the game to drink a coke or eat ice cream in the clubhouse

Otherwise, I think you nailed it.

I used to walk 36 in the summers a few days a week with my friends. Man, what I'd give to be able to do that again.

The comment about plateaus is so true and some of them are so brutal. I've learned to just accept the plateau I am at now because I dont have the time to put in the amount of work required to get past it. It has made the game a lot more relaxing.

I heard what I could understand; it's Padraig, after all.

John Buccigross commented on something similar, which makes sense. Just hitting a 9-hole course, followed up by root beer and cheese sticks. make it fun!

my son is 7 and loves the game. i need to focus less on outcomes with each of his swing and focus more on just having fun and being out there. it is a tough balance for me

during my middle school years, my parents would drop me off at the local junior college 9 hole course around 8 AM and pick me up around 3 PM. I played 45-54 holes every day. Walking.

Standing ovation.

I don't have kids but feel like this is fantastic advice for those who do.

Honestly probably some wisdom in there for all of us.

Will definitely keep this in mind when my nieces get old enough to come visit me.

He's right.

I love it when an accent is so strong that they have to do English subtitles for an English speaker.

Mine are 6 and 4, haven't got them going on golf at all, but need to soon.

The coke/ice cream in the clubhouse is such good advice. My kids really respond to that sort of thing. The "big boy time" aspect of it is huge. Getting to do what they think grownups do.

My 6yo daughter just took a flight with Grandma to go see her baby cousin. Her first time on a plane since she was 2. Picked her up from her airport and she talked for 30 about the trip, where they ate, her cousin, all sorts of things about airports and flying. When I asked her what her favorite part about flying was . . . "The sprite."

My daughter doesn't play much golf but loves getting a candy bar and drink from the cart girl and that's all she talks about after the round, getting skittles

Kids aren't dumb.

They know parents are using tricks to get them interested in golf.

I play with avid golfers. I don't believe their parents used "tricks" or "strategies" to get them interested in golf.

My dad showed me how to grip and how to sway swing....all 10 minutes worth and gave me his old set of Lynx clubs. If anything, he said "your priority isn't golf."

We focus too much on kids instead of pursing our own excellence as a role model. And if kids are interested in golf, they won't need anyone to push them to golf. They'll beg you to take them "golfing." If not, leave them ****ers at home.

I have three kids that golf. I have one kid that would die to go golfing, but she just turned 4.

kid 1 - 10 years old. shoots 60-70 on nine holes from ladies tees (2583 is distance on usual course we play.) he has always loved golfing. if he could put he would shoot in the low 50s. he five puts at least twice per nine.

kid 2 - 8 year old girl. terrible at golf. if she misses twice i let her throw the ball. she loves going out, but always asks for M&Ms. she is a pleasure to play with b/c she is willing to pick up anytime and just chill.

kid 3 - 6 year old boy. strange golfer. whiffs 50% of the time, but when he hits it can put it down the course 75-80 yards with any club. he typically cans a 20 footer every single time we play. he usually takes off a hole or two b/c he wants to look at the turtles in the ponds. he will just walk off and walk alongside us for those holes and then come back to us when the ponds are over.

i cannot imagine any kid not enjoying golf. i have never brought a kid out that disliked it.
