What are the things you work on prior.

We are 2+ weeks out from Southwind MG. Whats at the top of your lists to work on?

1. Putting
2. Short game
3. Liver
4. Tempo
5. Coordinating clothes
6. Handicap

I'm against coordinated clothes but that's just me.

Handicap is important. If you're between scratch to 4, extremely hard to win.

Yall have to ham and egg it like you own the breakfast joint.

Go easy on Friday practice round and Saturday party. Absolutely do not celebrate Saturday if you had a good showing.

Member guest is won on Sunday.

Last 5 MG, we've won one, second twice and third twice. So we are always there...

Good luck and make memories.

What format does your MG have ?

That is an VERY strong showing over the past 5 years.

We do flights of 6
Best ball vs every team with a max 6 points per match plus 1 for winning.
6th match is based on rankings after 5 matches and not capped. 1v4, 2v3, 5v6. Allows those team all to have a chance.

Feom there its an alternate shot horse race on holes 15-18, with only 2 teams left on 18.

Same as TEXAGGIES at my current course. My previous course 2 man best ball flighted after day 1 then win the flight to get in the shootout alternate shot on 10, 11, 17 and 18 with 2 team elimination on 10, 11, and 17. The year we won, we played the 18th 3 times.

I'm playing in my first member guest with a friend of mine (his course) in October. I'm just trying to play as much golf between now then as I can. With a busy schedule thats only been a round or two a week. As we get closer to that date I'll probably try to work on some small stuff.

We're both 5-7 handicaps. I think the format is best ball, so we should do ok. However, this will probably be the most pressure I've felt when playing golf. I'm not worried about it though, as that's never bothered me in other situations.

Any tips for a first timer?

Last year we lost to a group with scratch as a 6, this year 6 as a 22 and another one this year 4 as a 12.

We won as a scratch and 4.

Ha, they're using GHIN numbers. I wouldn't do that crap anyway. I've been putting in my actual scores leading up to this. Unlike some people that only enter the bad ones so they inflate their handicap.
Stymied

Unless all of the participants are well known, handicaped best ball is a haven for sandbaggers. Its the nature of net golf to a degree but some people will do anything to win.

I'm about a 2 and it's a pretty regular occasion to play in best ball events where 8-12 handicaps go out and shoot +2 over gross. When I have to go shoot -7 gross to tie, it becomes pretty worthless to really care much about it. It's just becomes a reason to go out and have fun.

It doesn't help when there are also big calcuttas involved. It only makes the sandbagging worse.

You know I'm being facetious about handicap yet hopefully giving you a sense of expectation on sandbagging that will take place. Go and have fun

I've been sandbagged by the same guy 2 years in a row now at my uncle's member guest. Last year the sandbagger brought in his brother who only has one leg and they still kicked the crap out of us. He's a "21" that shot under par for 9 holes against us in match play. He's a nice guy but avoids the calcuta so he doesn't get murdered.

Same tournament lets me play from the whites as a 13 handicap that's in his 30's. It feels dirty and I've asked to let me just play the blues but my uncle wants to win so I get to be the guy teeing of with a six iron when everyone else is hitting drivers.

Yeah no worries. I don't go into any kind of tournament expecting to beat the cheaters. I'm just excited to play golf with my buddy for 4 days. That's a win in my book.

I'm playing with a buddy at Lake Kiowa in a couple weeks. They are using our low hdcp in the last 12 mo. With a Calcutta the first evening. I think this format does a decent job of taking care of most sandbagging efforts. It's a great format.

Format: Modified Stableford. Daily quota established by subtracting each player's handicap from 36. 50% quota adjustment after Friday and Saturday rounds. 1st flight black tees.

Points: Dbl bogey or worse 0, bogey 1, par 2, birdie 4, eagle 6, hole-in-one/double eagle 10

FLIGHT WINNERS 4 places paid
SKINS - $600/flight per day (Friday and Saturday)
PUTTING CONTEST Cash payout 3 places
MERCHANDISE STORE - $250/person

Here are rules I try to live by:

1. Don't take it too serious, nothing worse then spending 3 days with a guys who are total dicks.
2. Never, ever, say "I'm sorry" or let your partner say that. We are not pro's and neither of us are trying to F up on purpose.
3. Have fun with match play, if you are playing match play. Lot's of strategy which makes it fun.
4. If you are out of the hole, pick up, these round take long enough. Know when to grind and when to say F it.
5. Get to know your opponents, don't think of them as your enemy, they want to have fun as well
6. Drink and have fun. There will be a point around hole 12 where we are "DDI" and feel like a pro. DDI = Drunk Dialed In

edit:
7. NEVER TELL ME I AM POPING ON A HOLE BEFORE I TEE OFF!!!!!!!!!! BAD THINGS HAPPEN

Size of the field is also important to know just how exceptional your past tournament record was.
A win, 2 seconds and 2 thirds in the last 5 years. That's pretty salty.
To place in most MG tournaments you have to win your flight to advance and then have to play well in the "shoot out"

If it is a small club MG with less than 20 teams, then maybe winning/placing that high in consecutive years would not cause much concern.

BUT if it is the typical 60-72 team member guest with 10-12 six team flights.

Well let's just say that would draw the scrutiny of the handicap committee at most clubs.

Here's the logic.

If everyone has a legit handicap (I know, I know -- they don't) then everyone has an equal chance of winning the tournament.

Finishing in the top 3 for 5 consecutive years in a large MG in statistically improbable. Highly improbable.

Yes and no. I have a partner that we ham and egg the crap out of match play. I bogey he pars, he bogeys, i birdie.

That's also statistically impossible over the long term if your handicaps are accurate.

In a fairly handicapped match, everything should ultimately break even over time.

II just had my MG, my biggest piece of advice would be to ensure your partner isn't on conference calls for 39 of your 45 holes!!

Freaking brutal.......if it wasn't open bar I would have been really.pissed, but we had a great time.

Our 1st match he was on the phone the entire time, by our 3rd hole I told him I couldn't play 1 vs 2.....not in our flight. I did my best........but got absolutely drilled!!
God,....I really hate the sips!

my partner 4 putted a par 3 for double bogey, we lost by 1/2 in our flight

In his defense we were running at 12+ and it was brutal.

Just out of curiosity, were you the member or the guest?

If the member behaved this way, he should auto go to the bottom of next years wait list if the event is oversubscribed. If the guest behaved this way, well...

What's the general rule when playing as a guest in these and the Calcutta

Member and guest offer to pay half for who every buys their team?

No obligation to pay?

Member pays?
FTAco07
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I wouldn't call it an "obligation" to buy half your team, but it's a bad look if you don't IMO. Member and guest should discuss and agree beforehand, but in my personal experience both member and guest share the cost to buy their half of the team.
Duckhook
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
In our Calcutta, if someone else buys your team they have to sell half to you if you want it. Teams generally do this, but I know guys who get bid way up that don't want to buy their half. There's other day money and daily wagering available if you don't buy your Calcutta team.

I've always split any Calcutta cost with my guest.

We play the 9-hole match system like a lot of clubs do these days. The one thing I don't like about our Calcutta is being able to buy another team in your flight. Too much potential for cheating. I've made my opinion known and others agree with me, but nothing's been changed.

Here is how we do it, but to each their own

We always split the cost of buying our team, and split the reward, if any
I tend to think their is an obligation, unless they are charging this to a nosiness expense.
As far as cost of the tournament, we used to split it 50/50, know I pay for mine 100% and when I go to his he pays it all, its basically a wash.
