Like in other sports, we all have our favorites vs. least favorites. I was watching some highlights from this weekends tournaments along with some YouTube golf videos and it had me thinking of some of my favorite things and least favorite things. Feel free to add to the categories and divulge into your whys (if you choose). I'll lead off:

My favorite catchphrase/saying from watching tournament broadcasts: "Useful" / "Useful shot"

My least favorite catchphrase/saying from watching tournament broadcasts: "Touch of class"



My favorite golfer mannerisms: proper club twirl, picking up a tee right after hitting the tee shot because they know it's good. The funny points by pros when their shots are way off (JT/Fowler for example)

My least favorite mannerism: When people snap their fingers at the ball in an effort to get it to stop, premature "good shot" calls that always end up being bad shots.



My favorite broadcaster/color commentary: David Feherty

My least favorite broadcaster: Brandel Chamblee

People who who say "good putt" when the ball hasn't made it to the cup yet drive me insane. Results in a missed putt like 99% of the time in my experience.

Favorite: just about anything that came out of Peter Alliss' mouth:

Least: "suddenly he's only (fill in the blank: 1, 2, etc.) shots behind/ahead."

It's as if making a birdie or bogie creates some miracle in the scoring.

My favorite catchphrase/saying from watching tournament broadcasts: "Useful" / "Useful shot" - EASILY the only correct answer

My least favorite catchphrase/saying from watching tournament broadcasts: Anything that Johnny Miller tried to use more than once

My favorite golfer mannerisms: picking up a tee before the ball even reaches its apex

My least favorite mannerism: somebody calling out someone for doing their job, i.e. Sergio beeching to a rules official or something similar

My favorite broadcaster/color commentary: David Feherty and Nick Faldo

My least favorite broadcaster: Brandel Chamblee now that Miller is done

Favorite: Specific insight of the course or playing conditions that one can't fully appreciate from watching on TV. Love when the course is highlighted, as well as all the hard work the grounds crew puts into preparation for the event.

Least Favorite: Irrelevant color commentary that gets inserted to prevent dead spots. Yeah, I'm an outlier, but I'd rather silence or the sounds of the course/tournament than hear some random dialogue between the announcers.

Least favorite - "less than driver"

Another favorite...

"Yes Sir!!!"

Another used to be favorite during John Daily Fred Couples Era...but not no more

"YOU DA MAN!!!!"

Always a fan of the term "finds himself in a spot of bother", although rarely used in American golf broadcasts.

Azinger is one of my least favorite broadcasters. He's trying to be a poor man's Johnny Miller.

Least favorite - not egregious but my pet peeve

"This putt breaks left to right." or "This putt breaks right to left.
Just say this putt breaks to the right or to the left.

Feherty commenting on a guy that had struggled with a leg injury: "If he were a horse, they would of put him down by now".

Chamblee is to Golf what Collinsworth is to football. I think Chamblee may in fact have a smaller fan club than Collinsworth if that's even possible

Favorite: anything Feherty says

Least Favorite: anything Dottie says

Favorite mannerism: Hideki dropping his club in disgust, followed moments later by the ball hitting the flagstick.

How no one has mentioned "better than most" is amazing.


I really dislike the commercial with the "better than most, better than most, BETTER THAN MOST!"

Just found out Chamblee is a sip, the smugness, arrogance and inflated self image.......it all makes sense now

I can never remember her name, but there was an Irish (or Scottish) female commentator on PGA Radio that was on the course and she was by far my favorite listen for anything.
