Son's putter head fell off after some kids played with it this weekend. So looking at doing a new putter for him and kind of want to do something fun, not just a normal kids putter. I don't know why, just what I want to do. Been reading that there is very little difference in the head of a kids putter vs. an adult putter, the main difference is the shaft length and offset of the grip for weight.

So was thinking of getting him an older Scotty with adjustable head weights and installing a shaft cut down to 27" cause that should carry him for at least his next major growth period.

Anyone ever done this or any suggestions/thoughts? Main thing I read was to keep the head as light as possible since there is less shaft, but besides that it should be fine. I think it would be cool for him to start using the same head now and for the next 15+ years if I only need to reshaft it.

I'm all for staying with same equipment for a long time instead switching every year because the manufacturer says more technology more better.

when you do get it cut down, if the shaft happens to be tapered/stepped and you get something like a super stroke mid grip (which is cylindrical inside), there definitely is an art to tapering the tape underneath so the grip is secured properly. you have to layer things in the right order.

I got this done for my kid, and the bottom 2-3" of the grip was off the shaft and really caused issues. I had them re grip it, and the second time the guy (the right one) discussed with me how to make it work and said the first guy didn't know what he was doing.

Great point and thanks! Was going to take it to the place I did my fitting and they seem to know, but at least I can now speak educated.

Any of yall played the Kirkland putter that seems to be a dead knockoff of a Scotty Newport? Trying to figure out if a Kirkland at $150 is worth it vs. a Scotty used at $175

they just gave me a new super stroke when they did it right. With the original, you could shake the putter back and forth and the shaft would move inside the grip - it was just a terrible job all around.

For a kid that you're cutting it down for??

My son just finished his final year of collegiate golf. I started him early on a cut down putter that I no longer used. He moved through 7-8 others until finally finishing his HS and College with a Scotty.

If your kid is young/beginner enough to have a cut down putter, the head doesn't matter.

Old Putter
Chop saw
Regrip
good to go

I have my newport 3 at 30" i believe.

Had my first putter cut down from 35 to 30" and it dropped the swingweight a ton.
