A buddy and I are looking for a early tee time July 10 before Yankees Astros. I'll be staying downtown and he will be in Katy. Any recommendations?

For close to downtown, Houston has two very nice munis, Memorial Park (home of the Houston Open) and Gus Wortham. As a nonresident, MP will set you back about $140.

Wildcat, which has two courses, is also close by. I haven't played it in a while but it has always been in good condition.

Tried to shoot for Memorial 2 weeks out, but tee times good booked super fast. Earliest tee time 10:50.

Gonna look into Gus.

I would do Gus. Wildcat is just a weird layout for both courses.

Tee times for Gus can be somewhat difficult. Not memorial difficult but they do get snatched up.

They open tee times at 7 am 7 days out of the date you want.

It's a great mini!

Not a better bang for buck than gus in all of Houston. Maybe not a bigger rip off than MP

Correct. We'll be coming in from Corpus.

That cypress wood in spring looks nice and is part of Foresight golf along with the two Corpus Muni's. Could possibly use up a free round

Herman Park might work also. I would go with Wildcat.

I can get a hot deal at Wildcat around 50 bucks. I haven't been in around 6 months but it's usually fantastic. Even at 80 it to me has far more bang for the buck than MP at 140.

Black horse is meh

Haven't been in a while but before the floods it was the best deal in town. But in my times going back since iys never been close to what it was sadly

Cypresswood Trads... greens were hit HARD by the freeze. However, it was well on it's way to recovery the last time I was out there (2 weeks ago). Although they had to re-sod a few areas of the greens, overall it's back in at least decent shape.

How is a course a rip-off if it stays packed? I think someone got their feelings hurt over the price increase and they like to throw a little tantrum on this forum.

For non citizens it's a rip off, OP isn't from Houston....assuming you can read you'd know this..

For COH residents it's a good deal

As long as you don't use words over 5 or 6 letters, I can manage reading just fine.

That said, I ask again, if the course stays packed, how is the price a rip-off? Free market. Capitalism. And other big words.

Yes?

Ok, I'll try again, mainly because you are amusing the hell out of me.

Why is it a rip-off for non-citizens? You have tons (according to Memorial Park) of non-citizens, out of state, and even out of country folks willing to pay the price and enjoy it.

If the course can get it, why is it a rip off? Expensive yes. A rip-off, no.

I'm sorry this free market thingy makes you so angry and combative.
Mr.Bond

OP asked a question. I gave a response. Memorial Park is NOT worth $140. If I was an out of towner I'd be very grateful for the heads up. If I traveled to Houston to play a PGA course, paid $140 and got Memorial Park....I'd be grossly disappointed in the value I received. Just because people have paid it doesn't mean the value is correct. I know people who pay 75 bucks for a t shirt because the logo on the sizing tag, in my opinion the value doesn't match the cost. I'm trying to help a guy out. If you disagree then tell him why he should spend $140 on that course

If you can't understand that then just move along.

A PGA course for somebody from out of town for $140 might be a good deal.

Playing it for the 100th time when you live in the burbs yeah not so much.

For what it's worth, Memorial Park at $140 is a better value than Wildcat at $50. With Memorial Park, you get a Tom Doak design that hosts a PGA Tour event. At Wildcat you get a bunch of drunk dudes hitting blind shots on an old landfill. I'd rather quit golf than ever play Wildcat again.

Houston does not have a good public golf scene. Golf Club of Houston and Memorial Park are good and I actually like the course at Gus Wortham quite a bit. They host the Houston City Amateur out there now.
Ag_07
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I don't disagree with you for the most part but I don't think Houston has a very good public golf scene.

Gus and Memorial are great munis but after that there's very few options for quality public golf. Cypresswood Traditions, GC of Houston, and Cinco Ranch are really about it as far as decent value golf.

Yeah you've got Blackhorse and Wildcat but their rack rate is WAY overpriced. Then it's the kinda goat ranch type courses like Jersey Meadows, Longwood, Timber Creek, and Southwyck.

I think overall for a city as large as it is the public golf is lacking in quality and high value public golf. Now if you go out and include Wilderness, Moody, Eagle Point, and some of the outer course then it gets better.
Mr.Bond

I admittedly haven't played Wildcat in about 6 months. Wtf happened to cause this hate? Everytime I've been there it's been in damn good condition

Definitely agree

Overall immediate Houston area public golf is sad. Used to be some really solid options in Montgomery County but those either went private or to ****

I now live in league city and outside of moody our options are abysmal

It's in good shape and like you mentioned on a GolfNow deal for $50-60 on a Friday it's hard to beat but no way in hell am I paying $90 for Wildcat.

At that rate $140 for Memorial is a good deal.
Mr.Bond
How long do you want to ignore this user?
90 is too high for sure. But overall I've always enjoyed it and greens were great

Another big thumbs down for Wildcat. Bad layout with tricked up holes. Also, you get the pleasure of having your car broken into while out on the course.
Mr.Bond

Sadly the car break ins are common everywhere. They got me at tour 18

It's the design at Wildcat that makes it unplayable. Stupid tricked up stuff. Nothing redeeming about the place.
