Do they have launch monitors? I know the fitting bays do, but I'm talking about the ones where you're just hitting into a net and you can book them for a half hour at a time. I'd like to schedule some time there and go make sure I know all of my current yardages. Anyone done this?

Just signed up at my local PGA store. I don't know if you can rent by the hour. It's $100 for a year membership. Unlimited use. First come first served. They give you about half an hour. But if there's no one there waiting on a bay, they just re-up your time.

The membership also includes some free regripping(labor only of course) and half off their repair services.

The monitors are by Foresight and they seem to match up with the yardages I see on course. Been 3 times since I signed up and I think it's a great deal. Still prefer to hit outside some, but it's nice to have AC and it's good to work on driver since you don't hit it off the ground anyway

Found the practice bay page that I remembered seeing. You can book online by 30 minute blocks for $9.99.

BENEFITS TO INDOOR PRACTICE AT PGA TOUR SUPERSTORE:
  • Use the same video playback and launch monitor technology while you practice as in a golf lesson.
  • The immediate feedback provided by the technology = an accelerated learning process.
  • Develop a more repeatable swing in a comfortable environment without elements impacting your results.
  • Learn your true carry distance for each club in your bag for better distance control.

Yeah they use GC quads i think. I went there yesterday to practice with some of the new irons. I normally hit 7 iron about 175-180. Its a high lofted 7 iron so thats not too bad. But i grabbed the 7 iron for the Taylormade Sim and the Titleist T300 and was crushing those about 205-210. Definitely nice to know that the average loft for specific irons has changed in recent years.

Yeah those yardages aren't very accurate

When I hit there I was hitting a 6 iron 212 yards carry. The guy comes up behind me and says "your crushing that...you looking at new irons?"

I said yeah those yardages are wrong....its physically impossible for the ball to go that far with that swing speed. He had no idea what I was taking about

On the opposite side of the humble brag coin. I went to Edwin watts the other day and hit my 8iron 150 which is about 15 more than I normally do. Felt good about myself Then proceeded to hit my driver average about 200. So ... whatever.

Do not trust the yardages at PGA Superstore. The spin is so wrong. I recently confirmed this by hitting in a bay then off trackman in the same day.

Yeah not only is it not a good machine but they also can add wind and altitude to jack with the numbers. Add on that the people running it mostly have no idea what to look for

If you're dialing in your distances I would get on the course late in the afternoon and spend some time hitting 2-3 balls from different yardages on the course.

If thats not an option set up a 30 min lesson with a pro and hit on the launch monitor at the range (Most pros have this setup these days)

Thanks for the feedback on the accuracy of the numbers at PGA SS, guys. May call Sellinger's and find out how much they would charge to come hit balls on their launch monitor for half an hour.

So when I was trying out clubs the other day and skipping 9-iron shots into the screen, the 60 yard estimate was really 40 yards? Good to know

I took them out to the range and they were fairly spot on for me. It would make sense with the loft changes in more forgiving irons. My 7 is current set at 34 degrees and the sim max is set at 28.5. That's easily enough to add about 15-20 years of carry.

That being said, I'm not really sold on those lower lofted iron sets. I like to have a more forgiving iron, especially in the long irons, but they're taking too much loft away now. It's creating a huge gap between my pw and gap wedge.

Since I'm in the market for some new irons, does anyone have any experience with some higher lofted, forgiving cavity back irons? Really prefer to have PW sit around 46 degrees as to not create a huge gap in my bag. Thanks in advance

I wonder if there's some kind of calibration for those machines. Yeah carrying 212 with a 6 is pretty damn beefy. The only reason trusted some of the numbers I was getting is because I brought my bag in and I was getting a somewhat accurate reading.

Played on Sunday and my yardages were again right in line with what the monitor has been telling me. Your mileage may vary. Maybe the Southlake store has theirs better calibrated.

That's where I would be going, so maybe I'm in luck.

Just to update, it looks like the southlake store is phasing out their floor sitting launch monitors in favor of these things mounted overheard. The new ones have some cool features on the monitor screen, but are noticeably less accurate. To the point I asked to move to one of the old ones last time I was in there. It had me carrying a 6 iron 210. 6 iron for me is more like 165-180
