Moving back to College Station next week. Are there any good public courses in the area besides the Campus Course? Looking for a place to play but don't necessarily want to buy a country club membership if I don't have to.
A&M is probably the best option. Wide open course.
Briarcrest can be tight, you only have a few holes you might get away with spraying it off the tee.
Pecan Lakes (Navasota) is wide open as well. Hard to lose a ball.
Other than that there are 3 private courses. Pebble Creek(I'm a member) and Traditions are pretty accessible if you know someone. Miramont, I've only had the luxury of playing once in a scramble in 10 years (never played a normal round - stroke play).
Driving nearby you'd really have to go to Montgomery or Magnolia (45min-1hour) for your next closest decent course.
Yeah, I forgot about Brenham. It's got character, but it could use some maintenance love. However, I heard Bryce Rodgers is the pro there now so that's a win. Hopefully they're improving things some and it could be a nice surprise.
I like most of the layout of Legendary Oaks, but it's tough to putt there. Greens were horrible last time I was there.Overall course conditions I'd rate lower than Pecan.
Brenham overall is in pretty good shape. Greens are good for a country type of course. However, they do/did have temporary greens for two of the par 3's currently (as of two weeks ago). Completely resodded them.
I'm thinking about joining in the near future put it that way.
