Wondering if anyone had any recommendations for lessons in the Houston area, preferably close to Memorial Park. Been playing for about 5 years and haven't had any lessons since my initial ones when I started out of high school. Hoping to mainly focus on 3 wood and driver. Thanks!

There are pros that give lessons at the Memorial driving range. Head down to the bays nearest the ball machine/putting green and you should see them.

Also a lot of people have had good experiences with JJ wood out at Wildcat.

Find someone with a trackman. Such a valuable tool to have.

Why? GolfTec took me from a 14 to a 4. But I'm an engineer and into analytics, so I was bought in to the process which did take a few years. It's worth it if you want to completely revamp your swing, but probably not for someone looking to make a minor tweak. But I was amazed how what you feel in a golf swing is often not reality. It was important to me to have the video feedback and measurements.

Yes avoid convenient locations with pros who only teach and have outstanding technology. Oh and you get unlimited access to their bays during your package period. Sounds horrible.

What's the pricing break down usually like there?

It's expensive. Been a few years and don't remember specifics.
I feel like pricing wise a 30 minute session was on par with the cost of an hour session at a course.

But was super convenient, had air conditioning and I like the live video feedback. Like the previous poster said, what you think you are doing and what you actually are doing is surprising.

...that said, .I need more lessons... golf is hard

I'll list my opinions since my last post was brief and a bit immature:

Pros:
  • camera tech is unique and very helpful, especially with 2-3 angles. I agree sometimes you aren't doing what it feels like you are doing. unlimited use of the bays during your package is probably the best feature.
  • website portal where you can review your swing and compare changes over time.
  • multiple locations, although the GM of the branch I was at discouraged using multiple locations other than for practice and to book lessons only with my "certified swing coach".

Cons:
  • your experience is very much dependent on the coach they assign to you. at the location i was at most of coaches were, and still are, a couple of years out of college. i wasn't able to work with a few and book lessons with whom i felt was helping me the most.
  • the non-stop sales pitch for re-upping new lessons and new equipment. once i made it clear i was not going to re-up the coaching interaction changed quite a bit...very rushed through each lesson.
  • even though there is value in technology, it is expensive. my 10 lesson package cost about $800. a lesson is 30 minutes, so it works out to $160 per hour.
  • the coaches at my location seemed to push the only the "stack and tilt" swing style. as the above poster mentioned, if you're willing to re-create your swing its prob worth the try. for minor tweaks it may be very expensive and not as easy to justify the cost.

After re-reading the OP, if you're an experienced player and looking for driver/woods only, it may not hurt to give them a look.

Derek Hooper at Royal Oaks CC. Had a few lessons with him before I got too busy and just couldn't make much time for golf. He has a players program that is a really good deal - I think it was $90 / month + $60 / each hour of instruction. Really nice facilities and he has all of the tech.

I've heard really good things from Golf Professionals talking about Neil in Missouri City.
Seems like a respected teacher in the business.

I take lessons from Tommy O'Brien at Memorial Park. I'm super picky about my instructors and I've left his lessons much improved every single time. He spends time teaching you to self-diagnose your own problems, which not many instructors do. He's also a great guy.
