Traditions gets lots of love on here but I rarely see anyone post about Miramont. Is that mainly due to the cost of being a member or do people who've played both just like Traditions that much more? I played Traditions once and honestly didn't really enjoy it. Never been to Miramont but the photos of the place look awesome. If money wasn't a factor would people still choose Traditions over Miramont?

Miramont seems "fancy", almost gaudy, a bit too much for my tastes, but I like the golf course much better. While Miramont can play just as difficult, I find it to be more playable than Traditions. When you miss big at Miramont, you can typically still play it. When you miss big at Traditions, you often find yourself playing again from the same spot.

Worked on the golf staff at Miramont my freshman year. Like some have mentioned above, a big miss at Miramont doesn't penalize you nearly as much as a big miss at Traditions.

I prefer Miramont as it is more scoreable and more fun in my opinion, although I have a right-to-left ball flight that doesn't fit a Nicklaus design (Traditions) all that well.

I also think Miramont resembles a lot of the courses the tour plays nowadays. Long, wide fairways, and big greens. Bombers paradise.

At Traditions you are an actual "Member" in the traditional country club way, management listens, at Miramomt you are nothing but a monthly check, owner does what he wants with no regard to anyone else. There have been several people receive letters saying you are no longer a member, most of the time because owner says so.

Miramont:
- drive up appeal
- most manicured course in Texas
- fun course that you will score well at
- has a member named Mortimer
- Don Adam vibe

Traditions:
- more natural layout; plenty of native, mature hardwoods and incredible topography for this area
- very chill membership
- course will make you better or quit
- has a member named RC
- Texas A&M vibe

Miramont members enjoy a fabulous well maintained golf course for a FRACTION of the actual cost to maintain and run a Top 10 in the state course. The ownership style is benevolent dictatorship - not for everyone but in my book it sure beats a dozen or more "think they know everything guys" on the typical country club board.
The former members that received letters EARNED THEM through boorish behavior.
The Miramont vs Traditions debate is hardly a new topic. Both are great courses. Enjoy the differences and be happy BCS has 2 great golf courses.

What are some examples of the "boorish" behavior gets one booted? We all have different opinions about where that line could be. For instance, is it the big personality with the propensity for telling dirty jokes loudly in the clubhouse, or an outright ahole bully that has a propensity for having angry confrontations with other members (or maybe damages club property).

If money isn't a factor, I'd be a member at both, but probably live out at Miramont.

One story I have heard (from multiple sources) involved a complaint about locker use during an event.

Apparently, guests playing in a owner-sponsored tournament were allowed to use member lockers, and some left them in in some degree of disarray that was not addressed by the custodians.

Member complained, and got a letter along with a refund of his initiation fee ($50k).

Is that the whole and exact truth? Probably not. I would guess there were other issues, and more to the story from both sides.

But I heard it from a couple of folks as an indicator that the owner (Mr. Adams) is the sole "member" and everyone else gets to be there at his sufferance.

Well we just made that very decision. Retired last year after working overseas for many years and maintaining a semi residence in Houston. Always wanted to retire in Aggieland. We like the Maramont golf course above Traditions, but the Aggie feel and Aggie fellowship we received at Traditions was the overriding factor in us choosing it.

A huge reason A&M Golf Team has won a National Championship and was #2 in the Nation this year and Women just recruited the best available Women's Coach in the nation... Traditions Club. Great challenging course, that has invested in New greens, new bunkers and new practice facility in last 4 years. Pro V-1 balls on the range, with covered areas and fans when it is hotter than hell. All for a fraction of Miramont. Traditions has Aggie owners also, but yes they do listen. In addition event offerings are better than most clubs. Best dang Boxing Men's event with steaks and cigars. If I want to do the fancy thing I will go to the annual Wine Spectator Dinner and have the #1 wine in the world. Today I watched the kids do a carboard boat race.Not that I care but they are putting in Tennis and padel courts. Football Season..live music every weekend...fun place. But yes as someone said, BCS is very fortunate to have two high calber Clubs.

Traditions = a shot maker's course

Miramont = a (very nice) resort course

> based on the aforementioned, take your choice

I agree whole-heartily with the previous poster that our golf teams are perennial contenders because of the course & facilities

I havent played Traditions, the only reason I've played Miramont was because of the special fundraiser they did for Harvey there last year.

The course was in immaculate shape and the greens were exceptionally good. The staff was very hospitable and friendly, and showed great attention to us even though we were not members. I considered it an outstanding experience and for those that are looking for an elite club vibe I think Miramont fit the investment.

That being said, when I think of my ideal golf club, I think of a place with not only an amazing course, but a laid back spot where good service just comes across as natural and not so much white glove but more relaxed. I've heard stories of places like Champions and Riverbend having guys just show up on random weekday nights just to hang out in their outstanding locker rooms, and I imagine that is the type of vibe I'd prefer.

I'm not knocking the Miramont, Lochinvar, or River Oaks style clubs - they have a standard that is reflected in the investment and I imagine they do what they need to so they can appeal to their target customer. I just think the ideal club is about the golf and relationships - exclusiveness is way down the list for me personally.

Also, I thought the initiation fee for Miramont was 100k - not 50k?

Miramont = no tee times
Traditions = usually need an advance tee time
M= Jimbo
T = RC
M= #7 golf digest best in Texas
T= Unranked

A few other factors to consider.
For me M = immaculate condition fun to play NOT a resort course per se
T = good conditioning - penal from the tips and the forward tees - lost ball count high for the average player

Both are wonderful BCS courses
They are just different.

Disagreement over which is best is inevitable.
Hope this helps somebody decide.

Traditions #28
With over 1000 golf courses in the state, you're getting to the point of splitting hairs. Both very good in their own way, just a different feel to each. Glad both are in BCS.

How many condos casitas and hotels have access? It's a fine course, last time I played it was jam packed and hardly felt private.

Regardless, the course is not my cup of tea, even if was empty.

All Casita, Condo owners are Members, most are social thus do not have access. Zero hotels have access.
Course is to hard for you... fine. No need to embellish on locker room fodder.

A few thoughts about golf course rankings.

The Dallas Morning News list is pretty accurate at the top but is very Dallas biased beyond that.
90 raters with at least 12 evaluations to make the list. Score of 1-10.
Briggs Ranch outside of San Antonio is #38 on the DMN list. Laughable. Zoysia fairways, near perfect greens and a stellar layout. No way that is outside the top 20 in Texas. (closer to top ten)
In the DMN list River Oaks in Houston is ahead of Spanish Oaks in Austin. Find me a golfer that has played both and truly thinks River Oaks is better than Spanish Oaks. When you find them, get them an immediate CAT scan.

Golf Digest minimum is 25 evaluations for their Best in State rankings. They use 8 different criteria and have thousands of panelists throughout the country trained to rank courses using Golf Digest methods. Is their ranking perfect? Of course not, but to imply that Golf Digest raters don't actually play the courses in Texas like the DMN panelists do is pretty naive.

Some golfers find polls fun and useful.
Others think golf courses should be played not ranked.

Whatever your view, Miramont has always outranked Traditions in the golf "ranking" polls.

I thought this thread was about opinions. Traditions is a hard golf course. I play one with as high a slope on a regular basis. I'm glad that traditions is going to make it but getting on unaccompanied is as easy as can be. Let's split the difference and call it semi-private.

Another vote here for Traditions > Miramont, in all aspects aside from course conditioning. Tough to beat Miramont there.

Depends on when they joined, initiation fees ranged from 15k-50k the first few years (2004-2007), upped to 35k-75k after I left town... and have likely increased since then.

A member can get you onto the course without the member being present. So you need to know a member that is willing to do it for you.

Is that unusual? I'm a member at Traditions and another club which will allow that as well.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not unusual at all. I played Preston Trail and Dallas Country Club that way this Summer.
In addition any Club Pro worth his salt can get you on almost any course. These options are still far from being a member...usually still can't buy a beer, go to locker room etc. You realize early you are a guest!
It's well known that for years you could play Miramont by simply calling and paying for a playing lesson.
Stating that a club is semi private because they allow a member in good standing to have a guest is crazy. Using that logic you could claim Miramont is public because they held the Harvey fundraiser.
Get back on topic which course do you consider the best. I love both for different reasons, with an edge going to Traditions because of daily challenge...shotmakers course. And if the word on the street is true...well, for those with some length they are adding some new tee boxes...not for me, but some are going to love it.

What is the initiation fee at Traditions for Full Golf Membership?

Also interested in the Non-Resident Membership rate as well.

I believe the full golf initiation fee at Traditions is $12,000. Non resident is $4,000.
If you contact Courtney or Ashley at the club they can send over all pricing - membership@traditionsclub.com.

The idea that these rankings mean anything is laughable. Go ahead and put down that paid marketing material and just go play and discuss.
