Golf injury to ribs

A few weeks ago, I came back to the game after being away for 15 years. About my third round in, I did something to my right ribs. Hurt like hell for a few days and finally went to the doctor. No broken ribs, but he believes it was a muscle strain. Well, fast forward a few weeks and it still bothers me. I have read everything from resting for a few weeks to keep playing through it to build up those muscles.

As much as I am addicted to the game, I simply can't just not play. I have tried to play through it and just dose up on ibuprofen and aleve. But normally around the 15th hole is where I reach my fatigue point.

I bought a Swing Fan and it came in today. Supposedly this will help build up those muscles. But my question is, do any of you have any ideas on how I can either wrap it or anything I can do to avoid the pain while I am playing? It's very very frustrating that it effects my game to the point that I lose numerous strokes on the last few holes.

I would rest it for a couple weeks. I had the same issue with my shoulder and had to bite the bullet for two weeks. Hasn't hurt since.

Chest muscle strains take quite a while to get better. No golf until pain is gone. Anti inflammatory medication will help. Playing through the pain is not a good idea

Could be oblique strain. Takes a surprising amount of time for those rib/side strains to heal, but it will if you rest it. If you don't, you'll just keep hitting the reset button on the timeframe.

Went thru this 5-6 years ago and definitely appreciate the "i can't just not play" factor. But sometimes there's just not another way

You need to sit for awhile.

It might be possible to practice your putting and possibly chipping.

Best stretch ever. After you're all healed up, give this one a shot

+1

I'm recovering from a snow ski fall where I bruised my chest wall on the left. 9 days post injury and still hurts a bit to sneeze, cough, yawn, or move around much. No golf other than putting and maybe some chipping until it is better gotta let the ole body heal.

holy cow, Kid we must be the same person...

I took a fall skiing on March 13th. Right rib cage - all of them - severely bruised. Right hip has a bruise on it like I have never seen, and right shoulder sore like I threw my arm out, along with disgusting looking bruise on right elbow. I am in bad shape physically...golf is impossible right now. The coughing and the sneezing the first week were absolutely ridiculous - never felt so much pain in my life. I couldn't push myself up out of bed.

It's been almost two weeks and I can now take the club back, but halfway down, when my right rib cage compresses - I'm done.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I voluntarily ended my snow-skiing "career" when I entered my early 40s. I stay in good shape, but I finally got a little trigger-shy about paying good money to do stuff my aging bones and joints are deciding more and more that they aren't up for.

yeah I did that too this year...

"I'm an above average skier with no desire for thrills or risk of injury"...one benign blue slope and a simple left turn and suddenly I am unconscious with pain on my right hip, ribs and elbow after two weeks. Not good at all.

Oddly enough I was on a chair lift and over heard the chair behind me talking about Aggie golf..."winner of 3 tournaments, Louisiana Classic, Border Olympics....graduated in 2000". I thought to myself this sounds like Ryan Palmer. Later that day, saw who I thought was RP at the hotel/resort I was staying at and after being in so much pain for such a simple wipe out began to think why on earth he would and PGA Tour golfer go skiing..

I ended up buying an abdominal elastic wrap brace. Pulled it up a little higher to cover my ribs and was able to play an entire round with no pain at all. Definitely my go to brace now!

That brace is going to get hot this summer. I know they're not everyone's cup of tea, but have you thought about going to a chiropractor? I have what sounds like a similar issue, and mine helps with it tremendously. He calls it a displaced (not dislocated, big difference) rib. He can't correct the problem permanently because it's from an accident I had about 10 years ago that forced me to stop snow skiing and almost made me give up golf, but he can alleviate the pain for a few weeks at a time until I re-aggravate it. After he works on me I can feel a significant difference in everything from swinging a golf club to taking a deep breath. If you're in the DFW area I can happily PM you his contact info.

had this happen on my right rib-cage about half way up in high school golf. couldn't swing without severe pain.

did Chiro (including electrical stimulation) and was back on the course in a couple weeks.

I'm actually feeling pretty well today 2 weeks post injury. We have a tee time tomorrow afternoon will see how it goes.

I played today and had a good time. Shot a 111 @ Briarcest which sadly is actually pretty good for me! Chest wall held up well 15 days after injury with minimal pain.

Next up is to get some driver lessons- my range & slice is a problem so much so that I have just been using my hybrid to drive the last few rounds since I get in bounds and around 200 yards with it fairly consistently.

Good luck and fast healing!

KidDoc, we should get together. Sounds like you and I shoot about the same and have the same issues off the tee. I shot a 107 yesterday. Only because I decided to keep my driver in the bag on the back nine and hit my 3 iron off the tee.
