Anyone ever played?

Here are the rules http://nolayingup.com/2017/09/11/wolfhammer/

Seems slightly confusing but I think I'm going to take some of these rules and apply to everyday normal wolf....like "the bugler"

Personally have not, but my dad plays A LOT of golf (about 250 rounds a year) and played this while in Cabo with some customers before he retired (sans 2012). It's a long story but short version, he had to make a 3 foot birdie putt to push and not lose $2100 on a 16th par 3. One of the other guys chipped in from a bunker for birdie. This is after my old man had knocked hit stiff to that 3 feet.

His partner told him what was on the line after he made the putt. He knew it was worth money but not that much. The hammer can escalate things quickly.

The most expensive game I played was using hammers and pig. Pig is where you basically dump the wolf and play your own ball after the wolf picks you. We ended up with a $500 putt on hole 15 and after we won it the other team said no mas.

That's basically how we play wolf but we don't have all the junk and we have a slight variation how hammers can be used. That and we only play for a couple bucks a hole.

Even with the hammers and the occasional wolf hammer it adds up quick. Especially if the low man gets to feeling froggy on 16/17 tee.

Hammers are a fun variation to wolf.

I played this game on our annual golf trip. Lots of fun. The best game we EVERY played was "Whip it Out."

Here is how it is played. Several items win a "whip it out". Hitting the green from over 150 yards, making a putt longer than the flagstick, up and down from a bunker, birdie, longest drive in the fairway, etc.

When a person does one of these things, he yell's "Whip it out" and the players NOT on his team have to come over to him, on the spot, and hand him a dollar bill. Immediate pay up in cash.

Oh man we had a great time with that. I have never heard or seen so much trash talk and dollar bills flying around. Give it a try your next competitive team round. It is a blast.

I've heard about Wolf Hammer from the NLU podcast before and read that post yesterday.

Sounds fun, maybe

but

I find these kinds of games to be a lot like my attitude towards drinking games --> that is, it's great if you enjoy them, but I personally don't need them and don't find that they add anything to my enjoyment. I've got enough things to worry about before I worry about how many dots I've got, who the 3 man/******* is, whether I'm supposed to have my beer in my left or right hand, who's my partner on this hole, etc.

To each their own.

Not a fan of games that slow down the actual game.

Don't play wolf the. Probably the slowest game out there. Not to mention adding in hammers and junk.

I usually don't, but other than teeing off in a prescribed order how does wolf slow things down?

That's the main thing that slows it down. You don't play ready golf. You wait for the wolf to tee off and then he waits to pick a partner. Then you have to hole putts that are usually gummies etc.

In theory if everyone has their stuff together it's not much slower but that's rarely the case. Throw in junk and then you have people measuring putts, counting strokes etc.

We play a regular Friday point quota/cash game in fivesomes, with each individual group also playing wolf with hammers. We routinely finish in 4 1/2 hours on a full course. Hammers don't add any time at all other than one side saying they hammer, and the other team taking it or turning it down.

We also play where you can pick somebody only once and there are no hammers if you wolf it. After the 15th hole, the person down the most leads off and determines the stakes on the tee. Ive seen wolf games start out at $6/$9 and end up at $60/$90 on the last three holes.

4.5 hour round would be pretty slow for us but to each their own. Don't get me wrong. I like action and like playing wolf but every time I've played it it slows the game down.

4.5 hours would be miserably slow and unacceptable for us. We almost never play wolf for that reason.

Notice I did say we play fivesomes on Friday, starting around 11:45-noon, on a pretty full course in front of us. We probably have 10 groups or so, and we putt everything out for the overall quota game (max is double). That alone is probably the biggest culprit keeping it from being sub-4 hours. I've never felt like we were flying around the course, but I also don't feel like it's painfully slow, either. My only point was that the wolf game doesn't slow play down unless you clutter it up with the other side stuff.

Why does Wolf take yall longer?

We play and it doesn't slow us down at all. We're right at 4 hours on a muni

Same....not sure why wolf would take longer.

Not sure what to say but the argument is really pointless. Wolf is a game made to make golf more interesting. Adding anything to a basic foursome will inevitably slow the game down. It's up to the player and group to decide if it's worth it. I love action so any wager or game is always a plus for me.

If you're playing for money, you should hole everything out, unless it's conceded. There should never be gimme's when something is on the line IMO. I personally feel there shouldn't be gimme's at all, but I don't ever let that take away from a good time. Just seems that the gimme length gets longer and longer as the round progresses every time I start giving putts.

We have some guys in our group who don't understand how to move from green to tee box, so when we constantly have to wait on them to go first, it slows down the game. When we play ready golf, they just end up teeing off last and then things flow better.
I like wolf, I just don't like when it slows things down, and for our group it does.

I'll notify the Ryder Cup team.

Now that makes sense. Everyone in our group is all about pace so that's not an issue.

But you guys know you don't have to putt everything out in Wolf. If Team A is in with par and Team B has a putt for bogey it doesn't mean anything. Pick it up and go.

One variation we started using in our wolf game is to have all five players flip a coin on the tee to determine teams. Obviously heads versus tails, 2 on 3, with the lone head or tail playing the hole as the lone wolf. Takes 10 seconds to flip, and ready golf is the norm.

Been playing hammer wolf for as long as I can remember. Only problem is we have some digenerate gamblers at our club and it can get highly expensive. One guy missed a 700$ birdie putt from 2 ft earlier this year. Im not good enough so I stay away from it with certain players.
