Traveling with clubs and want to ship them ahead via FedEx instead of on airline. Can a soft case be used or should I use a hard shell case?

With box soft case will work. Without box you'll need a hard shell with zip ties on the zippers etc.

Did this last year. Shipped my bags in their soft case. The guys at Fedex have sturdy cardboard golf boxes that they placed my soft bag in and filled the dead space with bubble wrap and paper. Clubs made the journey without harm.

Sorry, should have specified. By soft case vs hard case I meant something like this:

FWIW, I see these cases all the time on craigslist. Both soft bags and the hard shell cases. It seems like guys get this idea, and then only use the case once.

Interesting. Didn't think to look there. Thanks.

I shipped mine recently without a case at all. Threw the clubs into the cardboard box and added some bubble wrap. They made it just fine.
