Cheating in a scramble tournament

I played in the Coral Clubs Teardown Classic tournament yesterday. Fourth year I've played it. Typically a 53-55 wins it. We shot 62, figured we were middle of the pack, yet finished 2nd.

Now it's a large tournament and took 6.5 hours to finish. When the winners were anounced we laughed out loud. It was one of the teams directly in front of us. Keeping in mind it's such a large tournament you have two teams playing together and often two groups playing the same hole. Thus, it was a 6.5 hour round.

We watched the teams in front of us tee off on every hole. I can't tell you how many times not a single player on this one team failed to get a ball in play off the tee....they were terrible. The team they were playing with quit about 3 holes short of the finish.

So with no one to verify their score, they turned in a 60. No sour grapes. I honestly don't care, but we just thought it was hysterical they had the audacity to do it.

never have expectations of winning a scramble.

Happens at every scramble.

Last one I was in, the group with the winning score DQed themselves because I guess that they realized that they had fudged the numbers a little too much. Turning in something like a 48 with 4 hackers draws a little suspicion. And this was a Church Tournament.

How can you really think turning in a sub 50 is good idea?

Scrambles are a complete powerdown for me. Rampant cheating, I'd rather play my own ball, super slow rounds, etc.

I gave up caring about score in scrambles a long time ago. Now, I just use them as an excuse to get drunk with my buddies and donate a little money to whatever charity they're supporting (typically).

Ive had a dislike for scrambles since I stuck one an inch from the hole on a closest to pin and lost to a guy who finished on that hole. Not that I really needed another putter but that credit off the Scotty Cameron would of been nice at the store.

I've never cheated in a scramble, and if one of my teammates ever tried to do it, I would call them out. I know it happens a lot, but I still expect to win scrambles (long hitter, good wedge game = perfect for scramble).

I agree with HouAggie... Scrambles are just an excuse to goof off.

eta: I'm not condoning the cheating in any way. That's just what we do when we're looking to just have some fun on a Sunday afternoon.

Cheating in a scramble, shamble or any tournament is stupid and for small men or women. Aggies don't lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those that do.

If I played in a tournament with someone who wanted to cheat I'd definitely call them on it.

After all what is the price of your honor? I guess some have no honor.

I heard Dick Harmon when he used to be on the 610 Radio in Houston say how amused he always was at the amount of cheating that went into winning an umbrella.

That always made me chuckle a bit.

scrambles should award the good prizes based on a blind raffle, perhaps give the winning team a $25 gift card but nothing special. The Drivers, Bags, and trips should all be blind to stop the 30+ hdcp from pencil whipping everyone.

God to love nutting a drive on the long drive hole, only to see a old white guy in jorts go pick up the prize. (No offense TxJortsagent )

Try playing in a contractors scramble tournament. The amount of number fudging is ridiculous. On all but one of my teams we have turned in a score that was accurate to what we shot. We did have one where one of our potential clients would fudge a birdie here or there, mostly because he and his coworker really sucked and my coworker and I were pretty much carrying the team. We were not near contention of placing so we let it go. I am not going to call someone out who may or may not be a complete jackass if there is potential for a revenue stream for our company.

Growing up the Firecracker scramble was always a to do.

Its also where I learned "Asian rules scramble".

All of the teams made of asian gentlemen would put the flag stick about 3 feet behind the hole so they would never have worse then a 3 footer coming back.

They'd walk in with a 52 or 53 and none of the 4 could shoot 55 on 9 holes.

unless there is a caddy or some otherwise objective scorekeeper, i refuse to play in scrambles. i HATE cheaters. cheating on the golf course, especially when something is at stake, tends to make me a violent person. so in lieu of that i don't even bother.

scrambles are for drinking beer, going for the long drive record on every hole (regardless of whether the long drive contest is on that hole or not), and making sure that you return the cart in working (not necessarily unscathed) condition after consuming many a 12oz'er

Cheating in a scramble is just sad. Like others have stated, you're usually playing for a charity with a group of friends or work associates, no big deal. Don't know why people feel the need to "win" at something like that.

Now, my dad has told me stories about the Heartbreakers tourny he used to play in when I was younger. For those of you not from Houston, HB's is a stripclub south of town in Dickinson on the way to Galveston. He said girls would show-up to the course, drive around naked in beer carts, and give lap dances in between shots.

98,

Ash's in Waco used to have a tourney like that. I don't remember his name, but the guy who owned Ash's is/was alleged to be a a big time Bookie.

He would bring all kinds of *****s/****s whatever there called these days, and wager you 10 to 1 odds on various shots all over the course as his girls would lay spread eagle in to the side of your ball and play with their hmmm (little man in the boat) while you attempted to hit your shot. Nasty looking, but fun to talk crap to them.

Fun tourney, play with what you bring. I know, or have played with some of Waco, Temple and Killeen's best players who were there, but even still the rounds at the end of the day, failed to match up with the level of players that turned in "surprisingly" low scores.

Last year played in the Ronald McDonald Charity event at Clear Creek, I know the guys who had their own team and shot in low fifties and won. Couple of guys are fairly good, but very interesting turning in that low a score for a charity event.

We played in the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce Tournament a few years back at Ridglea with a stout team. We shot a legitimate 54 and came in 4th!

The next year they had some veteran's from Carswell come over and act as courtesy scorekeepers for each group. We shot a 55 and won by 2.

As far as contractor's tournaments go the best lumber in the cart has an eraser on it. Wow, there is some cheating at those.

Played 2 questionable scrambles....#1 was my dads company scramble and we shot in the mid 60s and everyone was in that general score range until the company lawyers came in with a 54.

#2 was a scramble in college and shot another mid 60 score but set in 1st place for an hour and a half while waiting for one single group still playing. When the finally got in, the turned in a winning score by 3 strokes. Several folks were none to happy.

really? REALLY?

wah wah wah wah wah wah wah

sure is a lot of whining for a game that by its very setup (4 players hit, take the best ball) is cheating in itself

you clowns need to drink more beer and enjoy life a little more instead of applying Prep H for all the butthurt in here

^cheater

One thing scrambles are good for is to tell me who I would never do business with. I would NEVER hire or enter any sort of business arrangement with someone who can cheat without even blanching.

If you will cheat with nothing on the line, what will you do when something is?

Cheating is pretty rampant in most scrambles.... and I think this thread is a good indication of why!

It's also why I almost never play in them unless I'm closely associated to the charity and organizers.

You were questioning why mid 60s didn't win a scramble? I don't think I've ever been on a team that shot that poorly.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Mid 60's is not a good scramble score. I play in 1 scramble every year with an A, B, C, D players and the winning team usually shots a 60-62, and this is with 2 players that are 20+ handicaps.

If I play with 3 low single digit golfers, our group can shot a 56 no problem, considering most scramble are from up tees anyways. You get 4 legit players and get them playing 480 yard par 5s and hitting wedge into most par 4s and they will birdie every hole

^^Agreed. Played in one last year with my brother (scratch) and my dad (no hcp but couldn't break 100 if his life depended on it). I played as a 2 and we won low gross with a 52 or 53. Heard lots of grumbling in the proshop afterward about the "threesome that shot ...." etc. We were nowhere near the last card in and it was 100% legit. Having our fourth player not show (didn't know him) we rotated hitting a second shot each time but we only used that "second" shot two times all day - we kept track just to see if it really made a big difference. By far the most fun I've ever had in a scramble. Eagled two or three par 4s and actually finished with mulligans to burn (2 allowed per player). Too bad I'll be on vacation when it's played this year so won't get to defend.

I don't think as many people cheat as people here think. I just think that some of you are not on very good scramble teams.

that's because we're too busy drinking beer, cutting up, and not being butthurt over who wins a meaningless game where you get 4 tries per shot

I don't think many of us are suggesting that rounds in the 50s are irregular. I've been on quite a few teams that have put that together. Of course, those teams have consisted of at least 3 single digit handicaps rather than a few 20s and a mid teen.

What leads me to believe in rampant cheating is probably due to the fact that I have seen multiple occasions where the team I was following was the last one to turn their card in and beat the leading score by 1. The timing of their card submittal and the fact that they may have hit no more than 10 greens all day makes it hard for me to believe they would turn in a mid 50s round.

That combined with the fact that so many on this thread seem to care less about the possibility of cheating leads be to believe that it happens quite a bit.

I don't advocate cheating in a scramble, condone it, nor do I do it personally.

I just find all the butthurt hilarious considering that the game in itself is an abortion of the rules of golf.

This is very similar to the GPS yardage argument. Those who are less than good at golf assume folks must be cheating when unobtainable (for them) scores are shot.

Played a two man on Friday at The Dominion. Shot 74 (I'm an 8, FIL is 14). We couldn't put it together. Guys behind us shot 63 and I witnessed the higher handicapper hole out from about 130 for eagle on 12, and his young Ag partner was hitting ~400yd drives (wind-aided) on every hole that allowed (I heard he played on Adams Tour? Wondered if he might be on this board). They had <100yds in on most of the par 5s. Dude was good. Sometimes folks play well. Its not always pencil-whipping at play.

Winning score was 60, which is stout on that course in 20mph winds for two guys.

this.

when my golf team buddies and i played scrambles we'd average -18 for the round. we'd also lose most of those to some 50+ year old guys that couldn't hit the ball 200yds down the fairway to save their life.
