So I'm tired of these 12 year old Tommy Armour 845s with graphite shafts. I was dumb for buying graphite shafts at the time, but didn't know any better.

So I'm contemplating the Ping G2s, the Callaway X-18, X-18 pro, or X-tour. Opinions?

I'm about a 13...will sell my left nut to get into single digits.

Agreed, dub. I play once a week...sometimes twice. I thought about blades, but then I thought "why?" If I ever do get in the single digits and want to get down to scratch, maybe I'll go to blades.

OD- I've heard good things about the Mizuno...I'll research it and hit those.

Get Ping G2's. Im 15 and have S59's but your no where near me in golf so just get the G2's. Ping is pretty much dominant in everything except drivers so get all Ping equipment and a 983K(best driver ever).

ALL Mizuno irons are good, but the 32s are blades. Doesn't look like techguy is wanting blades, going by the other sticks he listed.

Hunt down a set of the old Ping Eye Copper Beryllium Irons, the ones with the square grooves.

Those caused so much spin that they were deemed illegal by the USGA.

VR - I saw some of those at Golfsmith this weekend, and I hit the 5 iron felt pretty solid. But they were all beat to sheit...plus I need silver dot, +1/2 on the shaft, and bigger grips.

Ttech, get G2's. You'll love them. If I was worse than I already am I would be using the G2's. They are by far the most forgiving clubs i've ever hit in my life.

Go to www.golfopinions.com, register, go to the equipment forum, and do a search on mx-23 and the other irons you're interested in.

EXCELLENT golf forum.

BTW, if you're somewhat patient, you can get a brand new set of the MX-23s on eBay for less than $400.00.

The 32's are actually bigger than blades, or at least most of the blades I'm used to. Also, the MP-30's are forged cavity back for more forgiveness.


I'd say that whatever you get, make sure they're forged. Best thing you can do for your game because you get instant feedback as to where on the clubface you hit it... and there's nothing that feels as good as hitting a forged iron squarely.

Completely agree there. And if he's going for game improvement irons, the 23s are the only ones I know of that are forged. (seems like there might be one other)

And you're right, the MP-30s are a good compromise between blades and cavity back.

OD, i've never heard anything good about the 23's. I've only heard good things out of the 30's and 32's. I've heard great reviews for the G2 and I have even hit those and the Calloway VFT's and the G2's are so much sweeter and forgiving. It's all up to what you(Ttech) wants or likes. Im just saying, Ping probally has 1.) best customer service 2.) best custom fitting by far 3.) best selection of clubs you need 4.) best quality of clubs

dallasag, you have GOT to be kidding. In last year's Golf Online Club Test, the 23s DESTROYED the competition when tested by 16 different golfers of varied handicaps. Admittedly, the G2s weren't out yet, then, but still.

Also, if price is at all a concern, he's going to have a lot easier time finding good deals on the 23s than the G2s.

I don't know that I want only a "game improvement iron". That's why I also listed X-18 pros, and X-tours from Callaway. I'm good enough where I don't need the most forgiving club on the planet. But I also can't dial up a slight draw or a slight fade whenever I wish either. So I don't need a blade. I need something in between.

Haha, dont get a Calloway, the clubhead snaps off the shaft. I've seen it happen in like 3 tournaments with people in my group. The G2's are great clubs and by all means they are not "game improvement irons". I know people that are highly ranked with them.

If that's the case, MP-30s might be your best route. Like I said, check out that GolfOpinions forum. You'll find all the info you need there.

The MX-23s are no more 'game improvement' irons than the G2s. To me, the term 'game improvement iron' covers a wide, WIDE spectrum.

Most solid blade i've come across...and HEAVY, which I love.

I dropped 3 strokes since I switched back in Feb. while playing LESS golf than I used to.

Now that I think about it, maybe it's the less golf that is helping me.

I've hit several so far at Golfsmith. So far, I like Callaway X-tours. The contact is very crisp and soft...probably because they're forged. The Pings are fine, but just didn't feel as good as the Callaways. So I think I'm looking for a forged cavity back. I haven't tried the Mizunos yet but will today...probably the 23s and the 30s that sodium posted above.

Ordered G2s yesterday...just hit 'em more consistently than all the others. I probably overpaid since Ping is coming out with G5s. I don't think the head is gonna matter near as much as playing with the correct length, lie, and shaft flex.
