In the 60s and 70s when NFL players weren't all millionaires they did local ads for used cars, bail bond, jewelry stores, they sold mattresses and furniture...you name it. Helped them buy nice things for their kids.

when I was a kid I had a little buddy down the street. his dad owned a couple of mattress stores in Dallas, and they had a tv commercial that would come on uhf channels late at night. Their spokesman was John Niland. I think he was mostly paid in mattresses.
