This is a good hire. Tech has to be able to get the Texas kids that are rated 3 stars that are really 4's but overlooked. Texas high school coaches will help him with that. Same as Traylor has been able to tap into.
EX: Mahomes was passed over, albeit for Kyler and Kyle. There are more than 10 good HS QB's in Texas every year. One of them will have a slot at Tech.

Question will be, can McGuire recruit defensively?

The Pirate's firing has a lot of different variables and depends on who you talk to. Suffice to say it reached a point where the Administration and the Head Coach couldn't work together.

And just because Kingsbury is successful in the NFL is not a reason to revise his head coaching career at Tech:

Overall record: 35-40 Overall BigXII record: 19-35
Two winning seasons out of six: 2013 (8-5), 2015 (7-6)
Never had a winning season record in BigXII
Never finished higher than 5th place in BigXII

I like the guy, was a good fit for Tech's culture, but when you have Patrick Mahomes as your QB and can't have a winning season, it's hard to hide. But unlike the Matt Wells era, watching Tech lose games was at least fun with that explosive offense.

KK couldn't win even with Mahomes, and hated recruiting.
