A former four-star prospect out of Plano East in the 2019 recruiting class, Owens made his way to Texas ranked as the nation's No. 101 overall prospect, No. 9 safety in the country and the No. 18 recruit in the state of Texas, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.
The Longhorns' 2019 signing class ranked No. 3 in the country and No. 1 in the Big 12, though many guys in the cycle have since left Texas. Owens' entering the transfer portal marks the 12th member of the 2019 class to either transfer from Texas or leave the team due to medical reasons. He joins the likes of eight former Longhorns to enter the portal, including wide receiver Bru McCoy (transferred to USC), wide receiver Jake Smith (transferred to USC), cornerback Kenyatta Watson (transferred to Georgia Tech), offensive lineman Javonne Shepherd (JUCO), linebacker Caleb Johnson (transferred to UCLA), wide receiver Kennedy Lewis (transferred to UTSA), offensive lineman Willie Tyler (transferred to Louisiana-Monroe) and linebacker Juwan Mitchell (transferred to Tennessee).
