Okies, could this be possibly true?

My aunt and uncle are moving from California to Duncan, Oklahoma where they are going to have a house built for them.

Apparently, the city of Duncan rejected their first site plan because there was "too much concrete for that lot size."

I would think that thse state of Oklahoma would be thrilled to have any home built within it that has an actual foundation.

Thoughts?

Of course it could be true. There are usually setback restrictions in any community. Most likely your relatives wanted to build a house that was too large for the land it's on to minimize the yard size.

Is that to keep your home from flying into your neighbors?

You know. I lost my brother in the may 3rd tornadoes that hit Moore Oklahoma and I'm not sure whats so funny about your post.

I'd like to think you don't represent all aggies on this board.

OU - Neither of those posters is an Aggie.

If true, I am sorry for your loss.

That having been said, mobile homes and their propensity to attract tornados have been a constant source of humor ("what does a tornado and a divorce have in common?) in this and in other forums.

oucatjuggler - You're on the wrong forum if you take offense to things like that. It get's much worse on here, and that's the way we like it. This is a pit, and if you don't enjoy it, there are other boards. For instance, we wouldn't juggle cats, we'd prefer to use them as clay pigeons.

Worm - If I remember right, Duncan is a company town (Halliburton) and appeared to be nicer than most small Okie towns. It probably has stronger restrictions than others. I may be confusing it with somewhere else, but I think I went there a few years ago to watch Adam Doiron play, and that's what I remember.

My grandparents lived in Comanche and Duncan was the "city" you went to if you wanted to eat out at something more than a Dairy Queen. They had a Long John Silvers. We used to go to "Kiddieland" there and ride on the tilt-a-whirl.

Jean Kirpatrick was from Duncan.

I'd still slash my wrists if I had to live there.

Mike: don't start the old "who's an Aggie" routine. I paid for two B.S. degrees from TAMU (SWOSU-junior & SWOSU-dottir), and helped somewhat in two others (son- and daughter-in-law). I say my $75K+ investment in TAMU gives me at least "honarary Aggie" status.

Worm: I'd suspect the residents of Duncan would be glad to help.

Dub: Duncan is a company town, but that's not always a detriment to the community.

SWOSU - I thought Duncan was superior to most Okie small towns. That and Guthrie appear to be better than average for your barren wasteland. It did have a park, but the quality of the high school football sucked.

I think the studium is across the street from the kiddie park. That old Rock Island steam engine is cool. I wonder if the old A&W drive in is still there?

Dub: if quality of small town high school football is your prime criterion, you'd LOVE Tonkawa (my high school alma mater).

When I was a student there, the band won state- and region- wide acclaim ... tons of awards in both marching and concert performances. The football team won 4-5 games per year, beating only the schools that have since dropped to 8 man football.

Today, the band is non-existent (they sometimes can come up with a pep band for playoff games) and the football team routinely wins state championships (and if eliminated, the team that beats them always wins state).

So the football is great and the band is lousy.

But the town itself will never amount to anything more than it's been for the last 80-90 years. Good place to live, but you'd never want to visit there. Maybe because the local 2 year college (Northern Oklahoma College) teams are the "Mavericks". Their drawn mascot looks very much like Bevo.

mike073 is thoroughly convinced I'm NOT an Aggie ... http://texags.com/main/forum.reply.asp?topic_id=263791&forum_id=6
