Thats what happens when standard def is broadcast to a hdtv, im assuming you have an hd tv

its a resolution thing. Standard def can't fill the entire resolution the screen supports by default, so everything that is not filled gets filled with black. Thus, the black area around the standard def area.

Edit: I forgot to give the technical term for it. Its called "The BDF Effect".
