It's a newly researched history of the Comanches and some of their lovable members, including Quanah Parker, the multi-ethnic son of the kidnapped Cynthia Ann Parker. It is even more detailed and explicit than two of my favorites, Fehrenbach's The Comanches and Wilbarger's Indian Depredations in Texas.

BTW, if I could come back as anyone, I think a Comanche male prior to 1875 would be my first choice. The freedom was unsurpassed. It will also provide you a guide to how you screwed up training your current wife and a "how to do it right" guide for training your next one.

When Comanche women weren't making or repairing the tents and clothes and moccasins and bowstrings or cooking or cleaning the game or taking care of the children, they were scraping buffalo hides with sharpened bones all day and keeping watch over the horses all night.

It also explains that the reason that the small remnant of the Comanches who escaped annihilation were shipped to Fort Sill was because Oklahoma sucks.

One interesting item concerned the minor Penateka Comanche chief whose vision inspired the raids on Victoria and Linnville which were carried out in retaliation for the Council House massacre and resulted in the Battle of Plum Creek. The Texans called him "Buffalo Hump". His Nermernuh name was Po-cha-na-quar-hip, which meant "erection that won't go down".

I wonder how long it will be before a sock by that name appears on this board.

I got a bite. The Comanches were not just the most effective cavalry force in the USA, they were savage terrorists whose acts earned the reward they got. The facts are that the two cultures were way too far apart to ever coexist. There could only be one winner, and there was.

As for other Indian tribes, the same applied to greater and lesser degrees. Assimilation just never would have worked for the majority of the individual Indians.

BTW, the Comanches had already kicked the butts of the Spanish, Mexican, and all the other Indian tribes they encountered after they discovered horses and decided to dominate the buffalo herds in the middle plains before encountering the Texans and the U S Army.

What kind of a name is "Poon"?

Comanche Indian.

Face - I am very envious of the life of a Comanche male after about 1750 and before 1870.

He did virtually no work. He hunted and killed buffalo and other game if buffalo were not around, but the women had to process them into food, shelter, and clothing.

He marauded other tribes as well as the Spanish and Mexicans, stealing horses and whatever else he wanted and raped women and kidnapped children, but until the 1840's he had a huge military superiority over his enemies and Comanche tactics didn't allow for many casualties of their own.

He made easy money trading captives, rustled horses and cattle, and hides (produced by the women) to Comancheros from Santa Fe for guns, whiskey, knives, iron for arrowheads, etc.

The Comanches had virtually no government to answer to. If one decided to go on a raid, then any who wanted to go could. Any who didn't want to, didn't. Thievery and adultery might be punished by ad hoc councils but usually only by forfeiture of some number of horses, of which most Comanches had more than enough. No fixed laws at all.

He didn't take care of the children at all; the women did. They were nomadic, but the men didn't pack up and unpack, the women did.

They were kings of the plains for two hundred years having killed or run off the Spanish, Mexicans, and about 12 other tribes. Game was plentiful and no one could compete with them after they became the greatest horse-mounted cavalry ever. Only white man's diseases and Colt's revolver brought them down.

They had more tangible, usable freedom than any group I've ever read about.

Got the book for Christmas, am about 4 chapters in (read 3 of my other Christmas books first) and LD is correct as to its content and the Comanches.

In a lot of way, they are like the terrorists we face today: No central government, completely different set of morals and ethics.

Took us about a generation (40 years) to bring them down.

Quanah's mom was recaptured from the Comanches by a band of Texas Rangers including one named L.S. Ross. Seem to recall he figures in Aggie history....

Comanches were definitely badasses. It would have been hell to live on the Texas frontier in the 1800s

There are millions of these guys around even today. We just don't call them Comanche males.

What do we call them?

Usually it is a choice between "welfare recipient" or "the defendant".
