My high school, I was at all those playoff games, but still in junior high at the time, my brother was in HS then.

Remember the Craig James fever and the entire game...glad to see it hasn't been forgotten

great read, good to see the credit due

Stratford grad here. But I went to Westchester for 3 years.

Walkeanne is WAY older than I am. I think I was in 5th grade in '78...maybe 6th.

If you look at that team, it was stacked with talent.

yea, that year between 6th and 7th is a jumper...although you were probably in 5th, so elem to junior is a bigger deal!(and yes, I know you're kidding...)

but if you went to Stratford your senior year only, I'd guess class of 86! (I'm '84)

I read that Craig James said he went to SMU because his girl friend who was a year ahead of him had already gone there, and he got no improper inducements. However, once he got there, he found out everyone else was on the take, and he threatened to transfer to Alabama after the fall of his freshman year. After that, he was on the pad too. I do remember that SMU signed the top seven running backs in Texas that year, and one of the freshmen had a better year than James or Dickerson. Unfortunately, he got a neck injury near the end of the year and never played again.

John Tyler with Earl would have kicked Stratford's butt with James.

I went to SA Churchill and my senior year we won the state championship two years before the semi final game with Stratford. I had some friends on the '78 team and I went to watch the game. Most of the Churchill team had the flu...it was a great game, tied 7-7 at half, until they wore down in the 4th quarter and James ran wild.

Stratford had two good RBs (James and another guy) and a QB who could also run well. The thing I remember most about the game was how the "other" RB started getting real cocky in the 4th quarter when the game was decided and kept taunting the Churchill defense. With about 2 minutes to go, the defense huddled and decided to send half of the defense after that RB on the next play whether he got the ball or not. One defender stood him up and the rest of them smoked him. After he limped off I decided it was one of the better 15 yard "investments" I'd seen.

10 years later, Plano beat Stratford in the State championship. Plano's starting running back? Craig James.

How Craig James can sit on tv and be one of the faces of college football after what he did in college is amazing to me.

James was one fast Mo-Fo. Problem was he hated to get hit/pain. I should know. I laughed at him often.

I remember living right down the road from the stadium back in 81 and going to those games at Stratford as an eight year old. Damn. Long time ago.

1985 Houston Yates or 1988 Dallas Carter are generally considered the best team ever. They both had future NFL players.

Santana Dotson was a junior and a back up on that Yates team. That's how loaded they were.

that was a great game, i was in jr. high as well, and visiting some family in town, so we went to the game. i remember some gal named "anne" who apparently loved to walk alot, so she had some odd nickname. Anyway, some of this anne person's friends were offering every kid there 10 minutes with anne under the bleachers, $5 a pop. Me and about 20 other guys lost our weirginity at that great game, and it was so dark that anne and her friends had no idea we gave them used toilet paper we found on the bathroom floor. high fives abound that day my friends.

Didn't Carter forfeit the state championship in 1988? Or was it another year?

yes, Stratford in Houston is off Dairy Ashford between Memorial and I-10, right by Tully stadium. We were the second to last HS built in the district, but right by the stadium. "modular", looks like a prison with all the windows on the inside!

Tully was and is an incredible high school field. We were pretty spoiled in that respect, when we'd go to away games (was in the band, yes, enter band geek jokes here, played flute and xylophone) many weren't even close to that, although the Katy (Elsik & Hastings) schools had a nice one. We played them then, but pre-conference games.

I swear Tully is almost nicer than Floyd Casey!

"For the first two decades of its existence, Austin Reagan hosted a highly successful football program. Under coaches Travis Raven, Carroll Lundin and Wally Freytag, the Reagan Raiders formed a dynasty in Texas high school football from 1967 to 1994. In 1967, 1968 and 1970 the Raiders won Texas state championships as well as being declared national champions by then-US President Richard M. Nixon in 1970."

The Dallas Carter team was dominating that year though.

Tricky Dickie loved UT and Reagan.....

I sent the club a wire stating, Please accept my resignation. I don't care to belong to any club that will have me as a member.

The best high school team in the history of this state was last year's Katy team. I know that they tend to sneak up on you as they have never had that superstar, program defining player and because they tend to play a style of ball that looks like it belongs in the late-80s, but that '07 team was ungodly. Nobody played them within two touchdowns and many of the games were so decisive as to be almost non-competitive.

FYI about Carter, they were tied by Duncanville in '88, which disqualifies them from consideration for best team.
