I have a 3 bed 2 bath house. I'm currently using one of the bedrooms as a home office. Assuming I get married one day I think the 2 extra bedrooms would fill up quick. I have a large dining room that goes unused. Would it harm resell value to convert this to a really nice home office? I work from home so having a custom office would be pretty cool.

What say yall?

What say yall?
1. Is there a breakfast area big enough for a table and 6 chairs?
2. Does the dining room have 4 walls and doors/doorways?

If yes to both questions, convert to office.

Go for it. You're indicating you may be in the house for a while and the office would be more useful than the dining room. Run with it! And post on the Home Improvement board your progress!

There's a breakfast area with room for a decent sized table.

Dining room has two walls and is open otherwise, so I'd have to get drywall and doors put in.

One of my good friends just did this with his 3/2. He has a breakfast nook area that still could function as the dining area. He mainly did the conversion to get out of his toddlers room that was his make shift Homeoffice.

He did have to build some rib cages and drywall to seal the formal dining room but put two sets of French doors on both of the walls. It ended up looking pretty good.

And to the posters point - he did this to save him from moving and selling. He's debt free and didn't want to go through the hassle when they had no other real reasons to move. Also helped that his dad is in residential construction and sent his crews over to help him with the parts of the project!

I'd say go for it. But make sure there is a "dining area"!

I got a crazy good mortgage rate so it would be rather foolish to move I think.

I say go for it. However, when and if you get married, your wife may want to have the option of entertaining in your home. That might include a sit down meal.

To expand on Combat's point, If/when you get married, she won't like the location of your house, the fact that it doesn't look like a Joanna Gains instagram account, it's too small, the __ isn't updated, it has "your" things in it, it's the wrong color and has all the wrong finishes. So do what you want for YOU, and assume you will be selling your perfectly good house to buy a house she approves of in the future.

(I'm not bitter, you're bitter)

He has a good point. You will sell "your/my" house and buy "your/our" house.

I've used my dining room as an office in last 4 houses. Although I just use as is without closing all the walls in.
