Don't recall seeing one, and at the risk of derailimg my own thread, I'm making a move from Dallas to San Antonio.

What's the general consensus on the board? I looked at all the PODs brands and they seemed way over priced, not to mention you have to wait 5 business days for them to deliver your stuff. All the quotes we're around $1,500.

I'm renting a 16' Budget truck (I drive a 4 door car) for 4-days. All in (unlimited miles) is $300. I'm also going to hire some movers now to help with the loading (2 movers for 2 hours) and unloading. Separate crews in Dallas and SA ($250 each crew with tip). $800 + gas - am I missing anything?

I'm leaving my car in SA after work on a Thursday and flying back to Dallas. I'll drive the Budget truck and La Chica Mas Bella will follow behind in her car with the two labs. If I need to take a second trip over the weekend I can.

So, in conclusion, this is the best strategy (besides using friend / family labor for free). Change my mind.

Sounds like you've worked it out pretty well. Props to you for hiring guys rather than making friends help.
The truck will be easy to drive, no worries there.

I'm also guessing you're in your 20s because most people over 30 would happily pay for movers rather than still drop over $1000 and have to move it all yourself over a long stressful weekend.

That's basically how we moved. When we rented the uhaul there was suggestions of independent "packers" for hire. We ended up with 4 college guys that were fantastic.

I've made 2 cross country moves and 1 overseas move. Pro tip on longer distance moves: don't do it yourself and don't be cheap about it. Most will reimburse you for your items that break (and there will be stuff that breaks in a longer distance move) and just the materials to pack properly are way more expensive than your think.

At minimum, hire a crew to pack and load and unload... unpacking sucks but it isn't awful. Packing is really awful though.

Basically did the same thing but we had two massive UHaul trucks from Dallas to Houston. Had my dad drive one of the trucks and I drove the other. Probably saved a few thousand.

Was about 30 when we did that and would probably still do it 8 years later.

It's not bad if you have enough people to pack it up for you. We just organized the boxes first so those were fast and easy to load via dolly, and then brought in all the furniture. We typically pick up a few people or more from the Home Depot parking lot.

You made your 60 something dad move you to save $$ at age 30? And you'd happily do it again a decade later?
Damn.

Yeah, he was doing CrossFit at 70. Driving sounds like it's a big challenge for you!

And that's what the wife is for, to pack and boss around a few men - makes it easy on my part... just drive one way.

Can your wife give mine some lessons? She's the one bossing me around to go boss around the hombres cause she doesn't want to offend them.

I packed up my house last week along with 3 shops and ranch house and moved to Colorado. I didn't lift a damn thing. 3 college guys and 2 huge truck loads did it all in 5 days. Best money I ever spent.
