Dallas checks in at number 2, with Midland, Austin and San Antonio cracking the top 20. Not at all surprised about Dallas, Austin and SA but with oil prices a little surprised by Midland.

Days on market for Austin - 46? Does that include from the time it is put on the market until closing? If not, I call BS on that. Every house that I hear about is within a couple days (sometimes a couple hours).

Since you guys have high property taxes over there (in TX), how fast are those creeping upward?

As fast as legally possible.

Bad times... we were paying about $9,000/year in San Antonio. Here it's a lot less but there's a state income tax. In the end I'm not sure which state really takes more.

Depends on the ratio of your income vs home value.

If they are close in value or income is higher than home value, you may be better off in tx. But if your your home value is 2-4x your income, you'll likely pay less in a state with income tax and low prop. tax.

People have different lifestyles, so hard to make a blanket statement.

I wonder how many people have a higher income than home value.
